Having wanted to do my boring looking Punto up a bit and asking for advice, a couple of people seem to think it's not a proper or good car. So what is you definition of a 'proper' car?
To me if it works it's a car! Of course I look and admire more expensive vehicles and dream, but I can't afford one .

if it gets you where you want to be legally, then it's a proper car.
Don't fret about what other think, do what makes you happy.

Who cares? If it gets you from A to B safely and without bits of it dropping off, then it's a proper car. If you like it, then so much the better.
You're the wrong gender to have a car as a penis extension. Ignore the inadequates and go and buy some Turtle Wax and some fluffy dice for your Punto .

I often drive my wife's Ford Ka cos it's easier for parking and it's more economical than mine.
You wouldn't believe some of the comments and looks I've had while sitting behind the wheel of that, "What are you driving a woman's car for mate, are you gay" I was even once called Paedo when they saw the baby seat.

Doing it up a bit will make it no more a punto. It will make it less though.

I think my Citroen C3 is a 'proper' car. It has four wheels and moves.

In that in my citation, the Citroen has four wheels.
...But, yeah, three-wheeled Reliants are in there, too!

I think it was just a passing remark from someone trying to be a bit of a wiseguy. Don't feel slighted.
There is a lot of badge snobbery involving cars which can result in certain sometimes rather good ones suffering very poor sales or depreciating rapidly. 'German car' often seems to equate with 'proper car' in many peoples eyes, Japanese means reliabilty. Whilst German cars often tend to be well built and Japanese cars trouble free (and sometime a little 'characterless') it's not always the case.
The mechanic who works on my VW hates French cars and Rovers, I've met people who can't stand anything Japanese.
Don't worry ... the Italians have probably built more interesting and exciting cars over the decades than just about anyone else ... and don't forget FIAT own Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari and Maserati these days.

First of all, What type of car takes your fancy (Sporty/cruiser, big/small, slow/fast) and whats your budget?
We can narrow it down from there...

Another point to consider, those with insecurities bigger than their income will be in debt up to their eyeballs
For what? so other wannabees don't raise an eyebrow at them for the 2 seconds they go by.

Oh I have a 'friend' like this, every car I've ever had he sniggers at and says 'what you driving THAT for'.Well, my matiz was my first car, I wanted something small (for parking) and cheap (to run and insurance) it was perfect until my OH wrote it off! Then I had a rover 214 which I loved and never had a problem with until I needed something bigger. I now drive a renault scenic which is like driving a bus but I need the boot space. The comments? 'what do you want to drive a RENAULT for?'
Its just car snobbery - as far as I can work out he only likes fords, and fast ones at that. However he has also been involved in several car accidents!
Ignore them, you'll be the one laughing when you can actually afford to drive your economical punto and his petrol guzzling effort is sat on the drive rotting cos he can't actually go anywhere!

My Punto was slow, painted in a hideous metallic yellow, cost me a fortune to run and and used to give me a condition I referred to as 'Punto Groin' (Dont ask)
But I loved it
Dont let anybody tell you it isnt a proper car 'cos it is
