Right, some basic questions first:

What operating system is your laptop?

Does the whole pc freeze or is it just your browser? If it is the browser can you download another (e.g. firefox or opera), does the fault follow on to the new browser?

Have you scanned your pc for virii and spyware?

Which anti-virus are you using? Also download a good anti spyware program like spyware terminator or malwarebytes and run that.

Are you using a firewall? If so which one.

Who is your internet provider?

Can you borrow another PC/laptop to see if it affected by same fault?

Thats a few starter points, do the above and report back.

id say upping the ram will not do it anyharm but if its only just started it sounds like virus or overheat to me and you say deffinately no virus
can you here the fan kick in- if not thats will prob be the problem
are you using the laptop on a flat surface- if so dont and use it on a solid surface
have you installed anything lately- if so do a system restore to just before it
try these and see if they help

Yes it'll be very slow with that little amount of RAM, but it'll also depend upon your OS, e.g. vista uses a lot more than XP. Have you fixed a swap drive, if so how big.

When you say 'freeze', what do you mean, does the whole machine lock up or can you open the start menu, can you 'ctrl+alt+del', etc...

Is your HDD full, do you need to defrag.

Can you use the 'ping' command from 'command' terminal, e.g. ping google.co.uk

Is your antivirus up to date?

etc...

I have the very same brand laptop, Packard Bell Easynote, which freezes from time to time. I shall read this thread with interest.

if you stay offline, does it ever lock up at all?

The usual causes of freezing are overheating cpu or faulty ram, however, from your description it freezes then carries on so it is more likely a software issue, you should make sure there are no viruses or adware. If it still looks like a hardware problem then the laptop will need repair http://www.trilogicuk.co.uk
