It is funny this because when I was a school 25 years ago I knew several lads who had large knives with them at all times, they wanted to be rambo back then.

I suspect that all this stuff in the media is a result of there being too many news outlets and not enough news.

I don't know anybody who carries a knife, and im 18. My brothers 16 and he doesn't either. But half the time the people who do carry weapons like knifes tend not to tell their friends in case they get in trouble.

When my o/h started a new job doing takeaway deliveries I got a pepper sprey that looks like a lipstick so she can defend herself.

After I recently saw the increase in the law against knifes (and knowing from an earlier thread that pepper sprey comes under the same section) I took it off her. She has another job now as well so not a problem.

But she didnt carry it to look for trouble, just to get away quickly if someone started on her.

Or you might need to peel an apple... or fancy doing some whittling... or be prepared to get a boy scout out of a horse's hoof...

Other people may have better reasons, but a knife is a tool that it's perfectly reasonable to carry.

On the other hand, carrying one as a weapon is a dangerous strategy - it might get used against you.

When would you carry a knife as a tool. Your going out for the day and think you might need to peel an apple at some point? Sure if your going from your house to another one nearby, but carrying a knife around town just isnt needed for innoent day to day tasks.

My little love monkey always carries a knife as a tool. I think it stems from being a scout leader. He knows the proper uses for a knife and would never think of it as a weapon.

I think the above qoute is a bit jumbled, but I know a few people that carry knives!
1 A Chef who carries his knifes in a locked case.
2 A butcher that carries his own knifes from shop to shop, he also stores them in a locked box/case
3 A carpet fitter I know carries a knife, and several spare blades I don`t think he has a locked case or box. Perhaps he should.
None of the above who carry knives are looking for trouble!
I guess you mean teenage age kids, in which case as mentioned in another reply I don`t think they brag about it for fear of getting into trouble. But no I don`t know anyone who carries a knife to use a weapon.

I've always carried a pocketknife with me, for any odd jobs that needed doing. And since I've lived in Sheffield I've collected a few older ones and always take pride in having a Sheffield penknife or pocketknife with me.

How long will it be before anyone caught with a metal nailfile is also arrested? And you could do an awful lot of damage with a long hatpin...When it comes to it, practically anything can be used as an offensive weapon. While the attempt to curb knife crime may be worthy, the reporting does seem to have been blown out of all proportion to the general level of crime that occurs.

You may have to travel back to the 1920s when Sheffield was notorious for it's knife gangs. Oh the good old days when all was safe on the streets!

He carrys it when on the job I guess.

Knowing the proper use doesnt make walking round town with a knife legal.

I wouldn't want to worry you, but there's a whole section of SF dedicated to people with knitting needles.

It's always in his bag, a kind of subconcious thing. It's amazing how often he finds a use for it aswell.

TO be honest I think we have to be really careful, you never know who is carrying a knife and it is scarey.

Indeed, last week a neighbour (an electritian) got into his van, and in his hand he had a stanly knife, needless he was reported to the approriate people and has since been dealt with.

I cant ever remember any school 25 years back having knifes like you say.
25 years back it was fist fights and even then it wasnt that violent.

I also carry a knife that opens bottles and is handy for unscrewing things. Never looked at it has a weapon.
