Has anyone plotted a time-table and gone on a bus tour around the country using the English Bus Pass since it was introduced or what is the greatest distance have you been using it?

There was the Sheffield lady, who did a charity "Newcastle to Land's End" bus journey, with her friend, when the new national passes had come through.

It took her about three weeks.

I know this won't figure in the longest distance, but I thought I'd try this journey using my pass, and I've done the return twice now.

Hillsborough to Cheshire - 4 buses from my house to my son's. Door to door it takes about an hour longer than going by train.

Any bus or tram from Hillsborough to the bus station. 20 mins
218 to Buxton. 1 hr 15 mins, then 10 min wait for linking service:
118 to Hanley. 1 hr, then around 5/10 mins wait for:
20 towards Alsager takes me to the end of their drive! around 20/25 mins.

Around 3hrs 20mins door to door. Just avoid nice days at the weekends - all those pensioners off for day trips!

But prior to my long bus journey, I will not disappoint anyone and on the Graves Park thread I'll place a posting for answers to be awaiting me on my return!

Ms Macbeth:- Does your Son do refreshments for travelers as a sideline?

You might find this site useful?

I tried it out for Sheffield to Bridlington and it came up with

Sheffield, Doncaster, York, Bridlington.

This site is usefull howeverf, be wrned it does odd things if you ask it :

Woodseats to chesterfield it tells you to walk to meadowhead and catch the 727 service to chesterfield this service stops at woodseats both ways.

On the way back it tells you to get off at cobnar road, during the research for the woodseats to london exercise (mentioned earlier) I used the above plus journey planner and company websites .

Regarding myself, the outcome was, although I personally wasn't interested in buses, I must have visited every bus garage in Lancaster, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Cheshire, Lincolnshire, etc at sometime. ( Plus Staffordshire etc ) - see post below

When the first Atlante an bus arrived in Sheffield my son had a photograph published in the Star along with a story about the then Bus Group.

From memory I believe a man from Dronfield, who either owned or was a driver of a bus, played a big part in the groups activities. I do remember a weekend that terminated at Norfolk Park with about fifty or sixty different buses taking part.

He died in 1982 but my son certainly gained a great deal from his hobby.
Another son, who followed David eventually, was a Aircraft enthusiast. So we have also spent a lot of time sitting alongside runways, Finningley, St Morgan ( Cornwall ) and Brawdy ( Pembrokeshire, Wales ) especially.

I would not bet on that. Until I went on a trip with my son I never thought we had so many different types of buses and garages.

My wife once took our son David to Holy-head, Anglesey, Wales. On a trip organised by the Sheffield Bus Enthusiasts group that left Sheffield early in the morning. By the time they arrived at Holy-head on Anglesey they had visited scores of bus garages en-route leaving only twenty minutes before they had to return to Sheffield via numerous visits to further bus garages.

Whilst neither my wife or I were not really interested in buses we certainly were taught a lot about them whilst accompanying our son who suffered with Muscular Dystrophy.

I would add. It is nice that ' Bus man ' has PM me. Over twenty five years have now gone bye since we last met.
