A village police community support worker who has been riding a bike since childhood has been ordered off the saddle by police bosses - who insist he take a cycling proficiency test.
Nick Barker had used his bicycle to patrol remote rural areas around Sevenoaks, Kent, before health and safety bureaucrats told him to take the test aimed at primary school children.
And he is now forced to travel between the tiny hamlets of Halstead, Knockholt and Badgers Mount on the bus - because of a shortage of police cars.
The married PCSO, who is in his 20s, has not publicly commented on his bosses decision to force him to dismount, but a friend said today: "It is absolutely ridiculous.
"Anyone in his right mind can see Nick is totally capable of riding a bike. What good is it to force him to walk around the place.
"And if he's in Knockholt and he hears about a live incident in Badgers Mount he might have to wait God knows how long for a bus.
