I've had an idea that might shame the local authority into doing something about the appalling litter that disgraces many areas of the city. I and others, could take photos whenever we're on our travels around Sheffield and post them onto a website for all to see. We could even have a monthly competition to find the most littered street in Sheffield (no rigging of shots mind ). These photos would of course be available for all to see, across the the world in fact, via the internet. Surely the council as a result, would no longer be able to ignore this problem and be forced into taking real steps to control it.
This could be one example of this forum exercising its might, after all even adverse publicity is publicity.

I agree, there's not nearly enough bins about. I think when I walk into uni I only pass 1 or 2 bins and they're both outside the football stadium.

I am forced to agree here. Bins do seem to be in a shortage of supply around Sheffield.

Well, have you seen the new posters put up in Sheffield town centre? They have pictures of different celebrities, politicians etc. on the posters and you can choose which person to stick your chewing gum to. It's meant to stop people from dropping their chewing gum on the floor. I think it might just work - I know there few people I wouldn't mind sticking my chewing gum to!!
Mark.

Today, I was in town, and the area around the Castle Square tram stop was anckle deep in rubbish. This wasn't because there weren't bins available, or because people couldn't be bothered to use the bins. The problem was that the bins were full and overflowing.
Is it beyond the means of our council to pay someone to empty them, when they get full?

I've noticed that some of the bins have signs on the side of them stating that you can get fined for dropping litter. Some of the newer signs say £50 (I think), whereas some of the older ones say you can be fined upto £1000 (again... I think - I can't remember the exact figures )
What does this mean? Does it mean you'll get fined at least £50 and a maximum of £1000 ... and has anyone ever known someone to get fined?
(Could you do a citizen's arrest? )

I agree there are nowhere near enough bins and those we have don't seem to be emptied often enough. However, it is still people who chuck the litter around. Is there any difference between throwing litter near a bin and nowhere near a bin?

I am in town most days of the week and I never have any trouble finding a litter bin, I walk past them all the time and also they are never full either.
Wherever I go I can always find somewhere to put my litter, especially in the town centre, so why can't others do the same?

No, because it was slow moving traffic (at the Safeway's roundabout on Upper Hanover). I think it would have caused quite a disturbance... lol

There should be a litter vigilante group.
If someone dropped litter, then they are followed home.
When it get dark, the group members would then empty the entire street bin in their garden, the morning before the bin gets empty.
People would soon stop dropping litter if stories like this appear in the papers.

Why fanny around with another web site? Why not just post the photos and location to your councillor and the council? You'll find all the councillors' web addresses at:
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-cit...-list-of-cllrs
You can email the Environmental Protection Service at:
mailto:epsadmin@sheffield.gov.uk
It works, I got a car shifted and a large pothole filled in.
