I think the crb checks take about 4 to 6 weeks. I have had a few done over the years as they only stay in date for a certain length of time, you could always contact them At criminal records bureau, PO box 165, Liverpool L69 3JD. the helpline number is 0870 90 90 844
Anyone who works with children or vulnerable people should already have one, and they could show it to you. Just choose a care-worker, teacher, social worker, nhs employee etc...... as a lodger.
as far as i know u cant crb check someone without there consent .. just ask any applicants to bring a crb check .. or maybe go to an estate agents and get them to vet applicants for you. . ie: references, wages etc ..
i know they do this service for a lot of landlords i work for .
Yes i've checked with CRB and i can't CRB potential lodgers. I can do a 'sunject access request' from south yorkshire police but this has to be done by the person themselves.

google their name and even their username if got from a forum like this. That'll bring up a more murky pass than any CRB check. If it brings up nothing then they are probably pretty boring and thus a safe lodger!
When I last moved in as a tenant, I was asked to do a "referencing" with a professional reference checking agency. They ask you for a lot of details - where you work, how much you earn, your bank details, your employer's details and where all you have lived in the past few years. You also have to sign a documents giving the agency your consent to check your past details. I think that covers just about everything you would possibly want to know. It costs about £35.
