Hi
i don't no if this would be better off in the sports section, its not really a sporty discussion.
Just wondered if you can catch Mackerel in Whitby, and what sort of fish is available to catch.
I know Whiting is quite an abundant fish because I have caught it there before, but I want to go again to Whitby to do some more fishing, do I need a license or anything?
The rod ive got is...well, farily shocking, its just a pole with some fishing line bodged to it. Im a bit of a newbie to fishing, so any tips?
cheers

I've only ever been boat fishing from Whitby, so I'm not sure what its like off the beach or in the harbour, but I've definitely caught Mackerel, Cod, Ling and Haddock, all good eating sizes... If your off up to Whitby, Id recommend going on one of the boat trips, hire some of their tackle and you'll catch plenty.. I can look out the details of the one I use if you'd like ?

I used to boat fish from Whitby years ago,and the mackerel used to be more august, september time. You can have good fun fishing for mackerel with a light rod and reel.
Other fish you will need heavier tackle,as has been said use the boat's tackle or tackle shops used to hire out tackle which tends to be better.

You can fish off the West pier at Whitby - go all the way along to the lighthouse, over the bridge to the pier extension, all the way to the end, down the ladders and you'll find loads of blokes fishing down there. There's also a fishing tackle shop on Church Street near the swing bridge if you need any gear. You can also fish off the East pier at high tide.

I went on a fishing boat trip in Whitby a few years back - and it was the first time I ever held a rod in my hands .
While we all maanged to catch loads of fish, they were all whiting. Also - the most entertaining thing for me was the sea sickness. I don't suffer at all (must be something to do with being a goose), but everybody else in the party was really really sick.
I know it is not a good trait to laugh at other people in these circumstances, but it was rvery funny to see all the formats of being sick - from the groaning slow issue of vomit over the side, the projectile squirt and the "shoots sidewise" from a hand clamped over a mouth

If you are going to fish anywhere you need a Licence, you can get them from the post office. if you are caught fishing without a licence the fines are huge.

I could be wrong but I don't think you need a rod licence for sea fishing, only for salmon, trout, freshwater fish and eels.

Vis-a-vis the requirement for a Licence, I believe that you don't need one for sea fishing. In addition on, say, the River Thames you only need one past a certain point in relation to the river being tidal, although I appreciate that it is tidal up to at least Teddington Lock, and you need a licence to fish there.
