petrol strimmers are more expensive and usually more powerful
I have one as I have a field to strim and the area is too big for an electric strimmer.
you need strimmer/mower oil and 4 star petrol to run it.

I've used both and would say that petrol strimmers are much more powerful and if you have one with a cutting blade rather than a cord it'll cut rreally dense undergrowth easily. They tend to be heavy so usually come with a shoulder harness and can be a swine to start if it's a pull cord.
So unlesss you're doing some major work or have a huge area to clear then I'd go for electric for ease of use although it is worth noticing the price of replacement cord as that can vary and the mini strimmmers that use short pieces of cord can work out very expensive

I hate the things. I have had 3 in the last few years. 2 electric ones both disintegrated after half a dozen uses. I have a petrol one now that won't start.

The only use for them is they really annoy the neighbours. I have bought a disk cutter now and that is nearly as good.

How to fall out with all your neighbours in one easy lesson. Buy a strimmer.

I suggest a good old fashioned scythe.

Basically as with so many things in life - you get what you pay for. I had a cheap strimmer which lasted 3 months and when I used it again...it was knackered! I then bought a decent electric one (cost me about £50) and I've had it 3 years and its absolutely spot on.

On the issue of electric vs petrol - it all depends how much you've got to strim (as another forumer previously said) - a friend of mine moved into a new house with a huge back garden.....all of which was just about head height with overgrown grass!! We managed to hire a big petrol strimmer which you effectively strap to your body with a harness and what could have been a two day job - we'd finished in 5 hours. Just don't be a numpty like him and have a fire with all the garden rubbish and because it didn't take hold immediately he threw petrol on it - and got blow back and took his eyebrows off....

As well as the points made above the other main difference for me is that a petrol strimmer can be used regardless of weather.

I would not want to use an electric one in the rain, or if the grass is still wet.

You also have the freedom to use a petrol one wherever you like (within reason!) without the need to have a handy power point within cable reach.

You'll not be able to find an electric one that has near the power of a gas one. You may want to look at how you're using it, it could be that you're using it too much, and may want to invest in two and switch off to give them a chance to cool down. Also be sure your maintenance program is adequate for the intensity of the usage.
