Plus was the place Majorcans and many Spanish used to go to have a holiday. Well that was a few years ago, I’m sure its changed a lot since I was last there.

That's because it's free from screaming sprogs, chavs and profligate parents.
Or at least it was................

Alcudia itself is very nice but it has what is apparently the largest holiday complex in Europe (Bellevue Apartments) right next door and it's a complete dump (as is the area surrounding it). Just be very very careful if you go to Alcudia, you don't want to end up there (and due to the size of it there is a high probability you'll end up there on any late deals/assigned on arrival packages).

My experience was very different although it was a number of years ago (which is why I didn't really mention it much in my original reply). But as you've brought it up; I saw some pretty shocking things including massive rats in food serving areas, a few cockroaches and a constant stream of ants in the rooms, thousands upon thousands of the biggest mosquitoes I've ever seen (there's stagnant water everywhere around the complex - there were creepy crawlies and flying things I've never seen before or since) and the entire complex stank of human excrement. In the middle of a hot day the smell is just overpowering. There was also rubbish and god knows what else floating in all of the pools.
Everybody and I do mean every single person we spoke to had the same complaints about the place. I haven't even mentioned a ton of other things wrong with the place like the lack of air con (or even room fans!), lack of facilities in the room, general overcrowding, lack of reps (although considering the amount of people on the war path every morning I'm not surprised they did a daily disappearing act), the fact they tried to charge us to stay in our room on the final night despite being able to prove we'd paid for the room already, etc. It was so bad we used to wake up first thing in the morning and take a taxi out of the area and return last thing at night for a few hours sleep.
TBH even if the hotel had been perfect I'd still not have returned to it. A good mile or so around the complex is (was?) just a mass of British themed pubs ("The Prince of Wales", "The Red Lion", etc) serving microwaved ready meals and selling flat warm lager to groups of shirtless fat balding loud angry red men. It's just not my cup of tea and it's certainly not a family resort.

sounds a totally different place to where i stayed .there were mossies though not that much of a problem .there is a lagoon near the complex which i suppose attracted them .yes there are themed pubs but i must admit we did not go to them.we went to a few restaurants near by which sold traditional spanish food and were very clean and child friendly.i really did not see a single rat or cockroach both which i hate

Salou is a large resort with an equally large long beach. If you are looking for something a bit more lively, then Salou would be a place to go. It also has the water park (I cant remember its name) just up the road and is very close to the airport. La Panida is just up the road too which is a bit quiter and thats where the water park is too.
Here is a map of salou with La Pineda .. Tarragona is close (to the north) which has a nice old city. I’m not sure how good it is as I never visited there.
