Nothing to suggest that he was a student though:

I heard the Police helicopter over buzzing over the city centre between 7pm and 8pm yesterday evening, but it was too early for this incident

does the fact that he's a student really matter though?

No. It just seemed like an awful thing to happen and I heard people talking about it so was interested to know. I'm at uni in Sheff myself.
What an awful thing to happen just before his final exams.

I just think that some would say, student or not, you don't get beaten up in town for no reason. there's usually more to it. this thread reads, to me, like he was set upon because he was a student, which may or may not be the case.
it's like when you read about gangs of people breaking into a house and beating the ocupant up - it's rarely random, there's often more to it. someone upset the wrong folk!
it's still a horrifc story and the culprits should be properly punished.

There is no proof whatsoever that I have seen to say that this is true so please keep that sort of thinking to yourself.

The poor lad's family and friends could be reading this and it's a hurtful and unnecessary thing to say about anyone without proof.

steve6665- I hope that the news is more hopeful today.
