Rather than gathering in business parks, offices, call centres who would be happy to work from home, or perhaps a local 'business hub' within walking distance rather than travelling to work every day?

Almost definitely. The amount of time and money I waste travelling into Sheffield on daily basis is beyond silly and if I could work at home or within cycling distance of my house then my life would be enriched, not only financially, but also in terms of having more free time do non work related activities.

i'd love a job i could easily walk to. its not as bad now i can drive but before i used to have to spend an hour on buses there and back, plus the half hour or so you have to stand around waiting for it. those 3 hours i could have used working and earning more money. especially when time is limited around school hours, those 3 hours extra a day would have been handy. if i could walk to work i would havebeen able to leave a lot later and still get to school to pick up children. even better if i could work in school! lol

Without a shasow of a doubt, yes. Travelling to work is now a major expense, so any initiative that removes the need to travel would get my blessing.

It would have been inconvenient, either to live in the hospital or to build an operating theatre at my home.
(Here is another sentence, as the board says the message is too short to post, so I'm adding a bit)

Obviously there are practical exceptions

I used to have a real Eastender's lifestyle (my Albert square consisted of School up the road, shops down the road, work 5 mins walk, local pub, down the road).

As a rep I used to drive 50,000 business miles a year. I would have loved an alternative to that.

I have remote compuer access to my server and have a paperless office (more or less) so I don't need to go in everyday.
Well except for meetings and the like, but for general day to day work I don't need to go in.

I only have a 15 minute walk into work but in theory I could work from home a lot of the time. I tried it a few months ago and couldn't get motivated and kept being distracted by SF and other things.
We have since been told we are forbidden to use our own computers for work due to data security.
