It can sometimes be the wire running into the connector so might be worth holing the connector and wobbling the wire before taking the thing to bits!

Although neeeeeeeeeeeeek's comments are right, if you're not confident with computers then take it to the shop where it was purchased - it may be covered under warrenty.

Be wary though, if you have damaged the internal socket then they might not cover it under warranty and they could try and charge you.

Post the model details, someone here might be able to fix it for a fee.

Hmmm, not the best machines to work on.

That might be the service manual for it.

surely you would be better if you are going to sell it getting it repaired first as it would sell for a fair bit more?

or has it been looked at and is now fubar

that said if i had 50 i'd have it as i've a 1640 here that needs a screen

just get a new socket , only £4.75, then either solder it your self or get the it guy to solder it in for you
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-16...2em118Q2el1247

just make sure that you get the right socket by using the proper model number(which should be on the big sticker on the palm rest or on the bottom of the laptop) and not series number ie. an aspire 1640 uses a different socket to a 1642
