EXTORTIONATE!!!! You can pick up the same LP's in Save the Children round the corner for £2, or charity shops in town for 50 pence, so why on earth are they sticking £15/20 price tabs on vinyl????
I know vinyl is a specialist market now, but those prices suck....no wonder no one buys LP's from Record Collector. I refused to pay £15 for a copy of Pink Floyds Wish you were here when a mint condition version was priced at 75 pence in a certain charity shop on the Moor!!!! They also wanted £20 for a Tangerine Dream LP that was on sale at Oxfam just a few doors up at £1.99....and the OXFAM one was in better shape as well. Crazy.......
Surprised Record Collector dont travel up and down all the charity shops and buy up all the old LP's and then flog them for 8 times the price.....well maybe they do but they MISSED the Pink Floyd minter.

Which rarities would they be? Got loads stashed away along with a ton of 45's and 78's.

I have the following on vinyl but I don't think they are rare or imports though.
Phaedra
Cyclone
Tangram
Logos
Has anyone sold their LP collections to Record Collector and if so, what kind of price do they pay ? I'm thinking of selling up one day.
On a happier note, I discovered yesterday that one of my albums is worth around £500 - I wonder if they would give me that much for it in Broomhill.

Got those, thanks anyway. There is actually a picture of me on the front cover of LOGOS, the photo on the front is actually taken at Sheffield City Hall (1982 tour date) and NOT the London Dominion Theatre where the album was actually recorded live. I am on the front row, although only back of head visible of course. Not many knew that........

Of course the thing is that they are a specialist record shop and as their name suggests, they aim for the collector's market to a certain extent, in the same way that if you go into an antiquarian bookshop you'll probably expect to pay more than if you found the same thing down at the Blonk St. car boot. I'm assuming that they're basically pricing their items with some reference to the rare records price guide that's published every year and if you look in there you can see some astronomical prices for certain things (as I presume Cols has done). I find Record Collector on the whole to be an excellent emporium and I think it's a bit harsh slagging them off just because they're pricing things according to the going rate.
The bottom line is - something's only worth what someone's prepared to pay for it. If it's too dear, don't buy it. Just be pleased you got one cheaper!

Good point. And yes, I am pleased to get things cheaper. In fact just bought an ORIGINAL mono Beatles Sergeant peppar album with the YELLOW parlophone logo in its original sleeve with the cut outs intact for £1.99........wow, thanks OXFAM!!!! I think thats worth about £60 if Ebay prices are a good guide......

*is off to all the charity shops to buy all the LP's and flog em on ebay*
actually, that don't sound such a bad idea although, maybe someone should be nice enough to provide these charity's with a rough guide of what these are worth so they can sell them for a bit more and make more money for charity...
surely if its worth £20 they'd rather sell it for £10 than £2... thats £8 more for the charity and still cheaper than record collector?

The Charity shops in my area, which incidently is close to Broomhill, do, in fact, have a person that tours them giving them advice on the prices they should charge. The problem is, as I understand, the person has first choice of the collectable stuff so we never see anything apart from Des O'Conner and Max Bygraves lps

RC have lots of very cheap vinyl LPs at the back (1 or 2 quid each) which are worth looking through if you've got time and long arms. I've bought a few of those by bands that i could only vaguely remember half-liking from the 1970s or 1980s. Often very rewarding and usually in good condition.
But the main vinyl section you talk about always seems a bit dear to me too. I'd rather buy the CD at that sort of price. Doesn't seem to be anything in between the two price extremes (which is what for example Vinyl Exchange in Mcr and that one in Notting Hill whose name escapes me, do better - the price goes down the longer it stays in the shop).

Hey there,
Just thought being one of the accused and reading this topic, I couldn't really not reply and defend my workplace...
All our records are graded for quality and priced accordingly. Of course things like original/reissue, country or origin, and numerous other points are taken into account. I don't personally price any of the vinyl, but I know it's done scrupulously.
Oxfam do have book and record dealers that come in and advise them on price, but in my experience they stick very inflated price tags on poor condition albums, and the cheaper ones are almost always worthless reissues. Oxfam is the worst of all the charity shops. I do agree that you can pick up bargains in places like Save The Children though, if you know what you're looking for.
Someone who is "Surprised Record Collector don't travel up and down all the charity shops and buy up all the old LP's and then flog them for 8 times the price" obviously has no idea how much work needs to be done in an independant record shop! Yeah, we'll pay someone to go shopping all day and come back empty handed. There's some admiral business sense. Unfortunately, our situation is such that we rely on people to offer us records to buy.
I'd be interested to know which Tangerine Dream LP was seen with a £20 price tag - I've been there for over 5 years and somehow missed that one...
To anyone looking to sell any records, we're mainly interested in 50's and 60's ORIGINAL issues, but anything you've got, bring it in before 2:30pm and we'll gladly have a look for you! We currently have a huge quantity of stock out for just 99p each, it's a real mixed bag and there are certainly some gems in there, as well as a collector and rarities section. Anything else you're looking for, just ask, we've got mountains of stock hidden away! Also, visit us on ebay, our username is recordcollector1978.
Hope I don't come across as too defensive, I just thought that the original post in this thread was really off - and being that vinyl is now almost purely a collectors market and having to compete with digital downloads, chain stores and supermarkets, an independant record shop that actually CARES about their customers and providing a substantially quality and personal service, just doesn't need slagging off by someone who has no idea how the trade operates! LAST thing we need.
Leah xx

Anything is only 'worth' what you can get for it on the day.
People will always try to get stuff for free or knock you down to almost free.
- Try doing a car boot! I'd rather put things in the bin than repeat that nightmare.
I don't bin it of course, they get bagged up & sent to my boy's school for jumble /fete events.

The records are worth roughly what record collector price em at (give or take for wear and tear and other bits and bobs), hell theyve been around a fair while, not shopped in there for about 10 years now.
Yes charity shops are cheap, i shop in em and find bargins, some i sell on for more, i found 3 beatles fanclub xmas flexi discs in a charity shop in redcar once for £1.25 each, sold em on to a shop advertising in the back of record collector magazine for £60 (theyre worth about £60 each.....in mint condition mind)
BUT charity shops ARE starting to get ridiculous now and its getting harder to find the cheaper ones now, quite a few now use the record price guide books and start charging £2 - £15 for any old crap (ie:- hiking the price up for a rarity but not taking into account the quality) or just putting a £5 / £10 price tag on beatles, queen, elvis records just cos they know the names big and people will buy em (again not taking into account quality) most are scratched to buggery tbh.
It takes the thrill of the chase out of collecting records via charity shops now (i mostly only buy from charity shops now) i have about 10,000 records, cds, tapes etc
I'm onto retro computer/console games/machines etc now

Normally secondhand shops give you a third to half of what the records worth, taking into account the condition aswell.
Best to try and sell the records yorself, either egay (didnt work for me), setup your own website, advertise on forums etc and get people to buy via email (im thinking about this way once i get my collection listed onto my computer) or reply to wants lists in the backs of record collector magazine etc (i normally sell that way now and again - trouble is you can only sell what somebody asks for)
Jacks records, aaaaahhhhh used to love that shop , spent many an hour in there, i know Ian the manager, me and a punk mate once priced his punk records up for him and got a free record lol
