Point taken about the food. We messed up a little there and will have more caterers next year.

I'm gutted I didn't make it. I have been looking forward to it for weeks. I just ran out of time. Glad the day went well for everyone. One comment would be to keep it open longer so I would have been able to make it

I definately thing more food stalls are necessary. The Japaneese stall seemed to have cracked under the number of people wanting food.
All in all 8.5/10 good event with a little bit of room for improvement.
And a guiness record was set. That had to hurt his arms

Uh-oh... which record was that? care to share?

I was one of the Parkour coaches at the event. I'd really appreciate any feedback about how we ran our base! Did you or your kids enjoy the com-and-try-it sessions? Did you enjoy our demos?
I know we were a bit limited, as there were only two of us at one point, and the fact that we weren't provided with any apparatus - we merely borrowed bits of scaffolding the climbing people had used to put the bouldering wall together!
We did our best to be entertaining in the demos, and we did our best to give as many kids a good session as possible.
If anyone would like any further information about coaching sessions for parkour, contact Dave: dave(at)northernparkour.com - he's hoping to get some set up in Sheffield in September.
A big hand to Matt and Julie for organising the event, they did a great job! Well done to everyone who pitched in with their specialities and thanks to everyone who attended!
Bring on Cliffhanger 2009!!

Does anybody know what happened to the White Knuckle Rides? I asked at 2 entrances and nobody knew. OH wanted to do the Catapult Bungee in prep for The Awesome Foursome at Magna. I wasn't aware there'd be no beer tent either - I know ... shoulda read this thread before going!
So some disappointment, but this dyno demo was pretty amazing, don't you think ... http://www.vavavita.co.uk/080713%20Dyno.jpg

There was two park and ride sites used for this event plus a link to dore station on the sunday when i called in the tesco par was busy but the bannerdale site didnt have one car in at 1145 .
Problems had been encounted on the saturday when the normal (3/4) bus service was diverted due to incodsiderate parking .
At the end of the day there is a balancing act between the park been used , protecting the service to regular users and the attitude of home owners who live near by most of whom have moved in since the park was open

I think we saw some of that Pakistani wedding on London Road around 6pm Saturday. There was a cavalcade of 10+ cars, full of chav asians, including stretch limos and a Hummer, blaring horns, windows down playing chav asian music.

Hi,
With regard to the white knuckle rides we heard at a very late stage in the planning (i.e. about 10 days ago!) that we would not be getting the bigger rides like the reverse bungee because of , believe it or not, the price of diesel! These rides are apparently based down in London and it was deemed uneconmmical to bring them up given that diesel has risen so much lately. We posted an massage on the Cliffhanger website here http://www.cliff-hanger.co.uk/whatso...-knuckle-rides but appreciate that not everybody will have seen this. Sorry if you came expecting them... I was hoping for a go myself this year.

fraid i was a little dissapointed with the festival, part of this may be due to the not so great weather on sat...
It looked brill for small children, but there could have been more for everyone else. hows about some live music, beer festival, more food options as already mentioned, some climbing films- rather than lectures..? basically music and some nice beer...
good luck for next year!

Went on Sunday with my 2 teenagers. A site plan would have been a good idea, I managed to get one off the man with the megaphone. Spent ages walking up and down rior to that trying to find what we were looking for. Never got to see the parkour demo, which is what we mainly went for, as the times weren't the same as in the programme, it turned out they clashed with all the shows at the other end of site. Couldn't find the bike stunts. Agree about lack of food stalls, if there had been one next to the parkour we wouldn't have minded hanging around an hour for the demo to start for nothing. Planned to have another meal there but didn't want to queue twice, so left earlier than expected. I thought there was going to be a continental food market selling snacks. Kids loved the large climbing walls. We all wanted a go on the toboggans, but it was for small kids. Didnt know the white knuckle rides were cancelled, spent ages searching for them. We wanted a go at stunt kiting, but they weren't doing any on the day.
But all in all it was a good value day out at £5, as all activities were free. Good location too, at least there was a long road to park on. Would definitely go again, if I hear about it, never knew it existed in previous years. Peak fm advertised it well this year.

Well I enjoyed myself - I was there as part of Sheffield Kite Fliers but managed to have a couple of quick tours around the place. Loads of really good stuff going on. Personally I was struck by the chilled atmosphere - there seemed to be a good mix of ages and types (families for a day out, kids on skateboards, outdoor types, etc.). Much as I like music (and beer!) I think I prefered not having them here...
I second (third?) the comments about food (I spent ages queing for the Japanese food - only to find there was a huge backlog :-( - still I did get a cheese & bacon oat thing - and very nice it was too :-) ).
From a kite demonstration/having a go point of view (responding to Julies post above) Millhouses park isn't the easiest place to fly kites (having done so in the past) as it's tree lined, in the bottom of a valley and close to roads and railways. Wind on the Sunday was also very low (and kept switching direction) so even though some of us were flying just outside the Cliffhanger area on the cricket pitch it was somewhat challenging! But if anyone wants to have a go (or find out more) then send me a message or contact Sheffield Kite Fliers directly.
Anyway thanks for a fun event

there were quite a lot of food vans if people just looked around. the oatcake one at the far end by the market stalls was fantastic. i think next time a map showing where everything is, including food vans, would be good. these are all things that take time and feedback to perfect, which makes it all the more exciting for next year!

seconded jimbojambo. my only main gripe was no music and no CAMRA tent.
i'm hoping that next year people will work together to all contribute what they are best at (as i've said, if it's held at millhouses park again, then it would be nice for the bowling club to be involved and give demonstrations. when i was a teenager back in the mid 70s me and my mates used to occasionally play bowls at millhouses and it's a great sport.)
CAMRA should have been there and it was a terrible shame, as public opinion shows, that they were denied the chance to be a part of it. as for the music, yes, there should have been a soundstage and bands in my opinion, but this takes months of planning, do people think it would be a good idea for next year?

hi ben, it was nice to talk to you and dave sedgley after his fascinating talk on the history of parkour in the film tent. parkour is something that has interested me from the outside for a while now. a very famous climber from sheffield, johnny dawes, who is renowned for his one handed and no handed antics on rock, has been clambering over bus shelters and tight-rope walking urban railings for a long time. you parkour lads may find the film about him, stone monkey interesting.
for anyone interested in parkour who didn't get to see or meet the northern parkour lads at cliffhanger, their website is here and there is a very interesting film report about the sheffield parkour scene with some great footage and interviews, on BBC North here.

hi kitejan, we took one of our kites but decided it wasn't safe to fly it. we were right behind your tent at the time and didn't fancy the idea of injuring any of the big boys!

I think you are on a loser with a music festival in Millhouses Park. It is too close to the housing. Same with a beer festival.
I know a couple of music festivals have been held in Graves Park over the years. Infact I believe that Supertramp actually appeared at a free concert many years ago.
Graves Park is based on hills and there is a massive valley in the middle with lakes in the bottom. It tends to focus the sound and prevent it being a nuisance to surrounding dwellings. The Rose Cafe would also be a great base for a beer festival.
Norfolk Park would be another possibility.

Foxy lady has a point about the music festival. Personally I don't see the connection between having live music and what the rest of the Cliffhanger event was about.
If you want a music festival with live bands, there are plenty of those around. The park was not exactly quiet anyway, with the music from various stands and stalls.
You could argue the same about CAMRA being there I suppose, but it would certainly have been popular, espacially on the sunnier Sunday!

Missus and I went down to Millhouses Park on Sunday, not realising it was Cliffhanger.
Cool we said when we saw all the tents and things but disapointed we had to pay to get in, ten quid just to walk around and laugh at people wearing sandals wasn't in our budget.
Not happy that parts of the park not used by the event were closed off, we'd driven down in our evil private automobile and the garden was fenced off! fortunately the grotty passage at the back of the Millhouses Café was opened up so we got our ice lollies without having to pay to get in! There's nothing like an orange Callippo when it's warm.
We really weren't prepared to pay to walk around stalls selling things, it felt like paying to get in a market. Decathlon (Tribord) were selling tents and there was a kayaking selling place next to the boating pond. We could also see an Army bouncy castle or the likes... Had we had children with us we'd rather pay for Chatsworth Adventure Playground than for a tent village.
Dore Gala is afterall free to get in.

I seem to remember a kite an baloon festival in Graves Park a couple of years ago.
They were taking folk up in tethered balloons for a spectacular view. In the evenings they had a mass take off of hot air balloons which looked fantastic in the evening sky. It went on until around 10pm when they had a fantastic fireworks display and fairground. Oh yes...and a beer tent.

It would be fantastic if someone organised a free concert where upcoming bands could play (rather like the Dronfield Music Festival). I would love to sit out on a balmy evening with a few bands playing, a beer tent and a hog roast. could you want for more?
