Its a gorgeous area with lots of countryside, 2 pubs, a chinese takeaway, a post office and on a fairly good bus route into Sheffield. Its also near enough to the M1 and routes to Manchester.

My Mum lives there in a newbuild (11 years old). The area is great if you enjoy walking in the countryside and the gorgeous Glen Howe Park is very close

I used to have a friend who lived there and I loved visiting, it is very close to the countryside, lots of good walks. There is a shop / post office and a takeaway as far as I know. Getting to the M1 is easy via the stocksbridge bypass. There are regular buses to town although not sure how long it takes now due to the works on middlewood rd. there is a good nursery there, and I think the primary school is decent. The local secondary school is stocksbridge (where I went!) and I liked it there.

Sorry you didn't get the house. I think it's a great area to live. Hope you get something you like in the near future.

Not sure whether I'm best to resurrect a year-old thread or start a whole new one, but here goes.

We've been offered a council flat in Wharncliffe Side. Is it still as nice as everyone has said it was, in previous threads?

Also, is there any sort of a newsagent/general shop nearer than Oughtibridge? My partner can't walk any great distance, and while we will have a scooter for her, it'd be nice if there were somewhere nearby that would serve as the target for a short walk on crutches on a regular basis.

A pub would work, but we can't afford to get drunk every night.

Liberty Drive is on Stannington, not Wharncliffe Side.

Yes there is a shop in Wharncliffe Side itself.

It's one of the last places where everyone still says good morning to one another and asks how you are.

As for being 'Cliquey' - I guess that depends on how involved your wanting to get yourself.

It's a great place to live in my opinion. The local newsagent/post office on Brightholmlee Lane is very friendly. Our regular postman is a nice guy, with a ready smile and a helpful attitude. I moved here from Manchester 12 years ago and felt at home right away.
