With Service Pack 3 for Windows XP just over the horizon, I've managed to find online the internal schedule for the release of the highly anticipated update to the aging operating system. Most of the stages will occur before the end of the month, though forced automatic updates won’t land until June. This delay should give system administrators an ample amount of time to prepare for the upgrade or simply come up with an excuse when things go awry.
April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates
More details about Service Pack 3 for Windows XP available in PDF at Microsoft’s site.

I got the beta a while ago but MS appear to have taken down the file. And I've reformatted since then.

Microsoft said last year that they would not be bringing a SP3 out for XP and that if anyone had already downloaded and installed one it was a fake created by hackers and could cause harm.
i wonder why the sudden change of heart when they obviously want to push Vista?

Even Microsoft realise that Vista sucks. This is mainly due to MS changing from businessperson-led to developer-led development, so Vista does lots of things, none of them useful. But at least it looks cool.
XP SP3 is designed to keep people using Windows while MS make Windows 7 as amazing as it can be. However by the time W7 comes out the only people not using OS-independent webapps will be nerds, developers, and niche CPU-heavy users like gamers, engineers, and scientists. W7 will be Microsoft's best OS ever and totally useless to boot.
I think this is the beginning of the end for Microsoft's software business. No-one wants to buy Vista and no-one will want to buy Office once Google Docs is good enough. Is it any surprise that Microsoft tried to buy Facebook?

"Alot faster" In most situations I have never seen a box running Vista to be faster, even running x64, x86 SP1 on various platforms it never outperforms (on the whole) XP
SP3 RTM? So it's official the actual release date and the build of 5508? It's appears likely this is the final build? before release?
Roll on the roll out

After doing some research tonight, and deciding to have another look at the imminent release and roll out of SP3 (RTM) i modified my system to enable the SP3 RC (or what i thought) to be downloaded using Windows update, as the only versions of XP i have are all slipstreamed SP3 bld 5508 which would require a reinstall & until clarified and officially verified by MS as the actual SP3 RTM I wasn't going to risk it.
I tested the SP3 bld 5508 iso's i have on VMware (Vista x64 & XP SP2) and Parallels Desktop (OSX 10.5.2) all seemed well there.
Running Windows Update offered me the SP3 RC from WUP as expected so i proceeded to download and let the installation take place i was making some notes with version and build numbers. I had regedit up along with the usual multi tasking watching MotoGP ('05), running Vmware VM's (XP+Vista+gOS) emule, Mozilla, Thunderbird, usenet and a torrent client so i didn't notice the installation ignoring any on screen updates
I also had amongst other things MS Sys. Info up after 20 nail biting laps! I noticed Sys Info. displayed 5.1.2600.5508 (xpsp.080320-1628 )
Which isn't the version i expected but as this is all as per the events of Vista SP1 i am edging my bets bld 5508 is the RTM of SP3.
Looking at the file date (bld 5508 ) and the posted schedules given, considering the lead times (distribution etc) this does look good to go and this pre availability for MS Testers (or anyone that is technically capable) looking also at time scale points to this conclusion.
XP SP3 RC 2 Refresh - 5508 = SP3 RTM?
We'll all know monday "April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers" comparing this bld and mondays will put it to rest.
Time to reboot, wish me luck "anything broke?"
POST Install notes.
The installation was painless even with the aforementioned programs running on reboot it's much the like to the 1st boot on a actual XP install even down to the initial Install Updates screen and logging onto windows looks remarkably like your profile has gone kaput At the desktop all seems as usual only time will tell.
FYI

"April 21, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. today finally slapped a "Done" sticker on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and pushed it out the door. The designation of SP3 as RTM, short for "release to manufacturing," wasn't much of a surprise, given that the company's schedule was leaked last week."
Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111: Service Pack 3.

I dont see why you couldn't, using that handy bit of software, the name of which completely escapes me.
As for Vista running faster, I'm talking program load times, boot up, games (?!?!?!)
and this is a completely perfect SP3 RTM (and an SP2 for that matter) of XP I'm comparing against, with needless services ripped out and boot defrags, registry fixing, disc defrags done regularly.
This is on a 2x2.2ghz dual core with 2mb L2 cache and 2gb of Corsair XMS RAM, 512mb Radeon x1950.
Bizarre eh.
