Used to catch the 52 from the Badger down to Darnal, quick candy floss then to the fair.
There used to be a fair at the side of the library in woodhouse before they built the Skelton.
Happy days.

about30 years ago i remember as a small kid going playing in high hazels park. the reason it sticks in my mind is because there was a boating lake in there and one winter in the 70s it became frozen over. me and a few mates were messing about on the ice when i fell thro it, luckily it wasnt very deep but i got a good soaking and a good hiding when i got home. i havnt been 2 this park 4 years since we moved off attercliffe and i just wondered if it is still there . thanks

l remember it well they used to hire out bicycles by the hour .
l also remember a tree in the park with a horse shoe wedged into it claimed to be off Dick Turpins (The highway mans) horse it was
certainly a very old shoe as the tree had grown around it.
We also used to go fishing for sticklebacks in the duck pond by the band stand. Boy, is there anyone as old as me out there

I remember the shop really well. They also used to sell pop and used cleaned out Sutherlands potted meat jars as glasses.

My friend fell in the boating lake too and we had to walk all the way home to Richmond Road with her soaking wet thorugh and covered in weeds.

No , it is not there any l9onger as they filled it all in when they made the golfing area larger. you can say that the golf course now takes praticaly all of the high hazels park at Darnall.

No the bmx track has also gone as the boating lake has and the chess pieces which used to be at the side of the bowling green and the pitch and putt. all this has gone because they said that the golf course was not big enough.

Unlikely, this was a dedicated track specifically for BMX's constructed out of mud mounds. It was Almost exactly like the one that used to be in Parson Cross park but much better.

I can remember as a child in the 1950s a house on the road approaching the entrance to the park and candy floss was sold through a front window. I also remember the live shows that were put on in the summer, just like the old end of the Pier shows.
There was a small cafe in the Park too, it was there that I first tasted Vimto, I still like vimto to this day.

I Think they called the little shop was called GOFFS i used to go there for my sweets as i lived on Olivers Mount opposite the park,

There was Brown Baileys Club at the top of that road

I also recall the boating lake in High Hazels and the Whitsun tide parades (showing my age now)

Well,I have good news for all of you who have fond memories of High Hazels Park.Up until 9 years ago,you are right, the park was in decline.
The loss of the top of the park to the golf course, and with it the circular walk, was the last straw, and the Friends of High Hazels was formed. They obtained funding to recruit a 3-person Development team, and the regeneration was underway.
9 years on,we now have 2 new children's playgrounds,a sensory garden replacing the old rose garden by the bowling greens,a revamped formal garden at the Senior Road entrance, and a community garden on the nearby allotment site (see link below).
By the Spring,we should have a synthetic cricket pitch, orienteering course and orchard in place, and significantly, the circular walk is back!
Why not get in touch with the Friends of High Hazels by calling 0114 2656900,or email paulatinfieldlane@bushinternet.com,and be put on our mailing list,or come and see for yourself?

We lost the top of the park to the golf course to replace the 3 holes they lost for the building of the airport.Somewhat ironic, when you consider the current airport situation!
