A serious thread now.

How would you react if (and when) the economy fell and money was worth nothing, it was merely the paper you held in your hand? When humankind gets thrown into a world of chaos and anarchy once again, will you be able to support yourself?

Now, I'm too old!

You will be able to now you've got rid of that rickety old bike - frankly, that was a danger to life AND limb...

I'll never let a thing like economic collapse affect me. I have far too much pride in myself----plus a rich uncle in Singapore and some off-shore funds and things.

I've always believed that I have well supressed hunter/gatherer survival skills that I'm sure will come to the fore if it comes down to that. In the meantime I'm just off to turn the central heating up... it's a bit nippy isn't it.

Your questions are inconsistent. If money became worth nothing, people would return to barter. Such an event has happened several times even in the last century. It causes a lot of economic dislocation, but it does not mean that nobody has any wealth.

How can questions be inconsistent?

They refer to two completely different events, but you're taking them as one.

Fair point.

I just think that the human race is so reliant on economy now that people would struggle to psychologically adapt to a new way of living and it would bring about a chaotic society.

It was rather presumtious of me to merge the two questions and I can see exactly what you're saying.

Fiat currency is worth nothing. Your £10 bank note is just a promise to pay the bearer the sum of £10. How much is ten pounds worth? ten pounds of what? It's just a piece of paper that says the bearer is entitled to it. Strange huh?

When a currency goes into free fall, it usually gets swapped into something else, precious metals, especially gold historically. Eventually, gold then becomes the new, stable(ish) currency.

I don't know if economic chaos and civil chaos are correlated. They may even be negatively correlated - the worse the economy becomes, the more people look to their leaders to sort it out.

I think you would get a real "survival of the fittest" situation where those capable of looking after themselves would manage but the less able would perish.

First thing is get the hell out of the city. I don't care if I'm sleeping rough, cities and large towns would become war zones. Once sanitation breaks down disease would be rife.

Seriously I'd pack a bag with what food I had and items of value (gold, alcohol, medical stuff), find my family and start heading north.

I think the UK, like Japan and other high population density countries would suffer terribly.

Unlike previous hard times, where we made stuff to trade with other countries for food, the UK's current biggest export is bits of paper and electronic bits of fiat currency.

I certainly wouldn't forget my tin hat.

It actually dates back to the Knights Templar who essentially formed the framework of modern banking. The 10 pounds actually refers to the weight of gold the note enables you to take from a templar safehouse and it was issued at the templar safehouse you paid your gold into. This was useful because it allowed you to travel large distances without carrying material wealth

Surely, a good clue as to what might happen would be to look at what DID happen in Germany in the 1920's ?
