If it's statistics you're after...

or guidance for the future, discusses secondary schools (eg Handsworth Grange) and their feeders. A little early now but I'd also be looking at the reputation and quality of secondary schools and even consider if you're in the 'right' catchment area.

Hi Cath, in my opinion Athelstan is one of the best primary's in the Handsworth/Woodhouse area, I work at another primary school in the area and Athelstan always has a good reputation amongst other teachers etc.

Athelstan are also very good sports wise and usually beat all the other primary schools in the partnership festivals and so on!

What school was your first choice?

Hi Lucy n Adi
My first choice was St Josephs Catholic School as i felt it was much smaller and would suit my sons needs better.

I appealed to get my daughter into the secondary school of our choice. We won, but you have to have a good basis for argument.

which is a fantastic school with incredibly hard working teachers. It is also given good funding as it is an integrated resource school, meaning your child will learn about tolerance and accepting kids with disabilities. Honestly, you have nothing to worry about

Hi Cath, Im assuming that with you not getting St Jospeh's you're not Catholic.

I know St Joe's is very popular with it only being a small school, but if you live in Handsworth I suppose the down sides are that the children from St Joe's aren't necassarily from Handsworth so from a social point of view your son's friends may not live local which could be unfortunate if he wants to play out with them etc when he's older.

Also if you aren't Catholic you may find yourslf in the same situation when applying for secondary as most of the chidlren from St Joe's go to All Saints and if he doesn't get accepted there he could be going alone to Handsworth Grange.

I know it's disappointing not getting the school you wanted, why not take a look around Athelstan woth your son, have a chat with the teachers and see if your mind is changed!

Good lucy with it all.

Hi, My 5 yr old boy goes to Athelstan, he enjoys it and hasn't had any problems. I gotta say that a few of the teachers are a bit 'old school' for my liking and the amount of homework for a 5 yr old does strike me as too much, having said that he is reading and writing really well gotta say I am very impressed with that. The new head is highly respected and has only been in place since Christmas so time will tell. To sum up I wouldn't worry.
