Hi,

I'm travelling in a group of 6 on a mountain bike trip to Europe soon. We need to get from Sheffield to Stansted and I've phoned a few local private hire companies but because of of our luggage (a bike in a bag and a backpack each) I'm struggling to find a good deal. I found one company who have a trailer they could use but the smallest mini-bus they have is a 16-seater so we would be paying a lot for that. There are plenty of companies who could take us AND our bikes in the 16-seater but again, we would have to pay a lot more for the big bus.

Ideally we need someone who has a smaller mini-bus/people carrier who also has a trailer.

Its a strange question...but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!!

Katie

Can't advise on the bus I am afraid but can I ask what you have done about insurance? More for you than the bike..
Cheers

Hi,

I haven't got mine yet but previously have had one-off trip insurance with Dog Tag and STA - both will cover 'mountain sports' at a slightly higher price - can't remember prices exactly but neither times cost more than £40 for 2 weeks.

Hope that helps?

Looked at a few places last night on line and it seems that many of them offer 1 year annual policies with a winter sports option for under £50. It seemed quite cheap but lthe cover looks good, just a bit wary.

the so-called 'one year' policies don't cover you for the whole year at all, only for a few weeks of the year.

I use Endsleigh, as they seemed to be the only ones that sell insurance BY THE DAY. All the others it's weeks or months. Prices are pretty keen and they're definitely cheaper than STA.

The cover I got just did what it said on the tin, it was your standard holiday insurance in all truth. I can't really hold anyone responsible if I hurt myself doing a dangerous sport....

If you hurt yourself doing a dangerous sport that is not explicitly covered in your insurance policy you'll find that you have NO INSURANCE.

read the principal exclusions section of your policy.

anything that can mean you put yourself in what they call 'reckless peril', means that they're not going to pay out.

this could mean anything from larking around boisterously while drunk and having an accident to riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

one of the PE's is this :

war, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities (whether war be declared or not), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection or military or usurped power.

this basically means that anyone caught up in a 'little bit of local difficulty', as the saying goes, such as those tourists that were in Beirut when the Israelis were bombing it (or, for that matter, in Israel when Hezbullah were bombing them) simply isn't covered.

I've got rid of my van now, but I would have taken you six and the bikes for £60-70 each way if I'd have had the time. Why not ask in the classified section of this site, it wouldn't be exactly comfortable but a Ford Transit van and driver could easily do the job.
