Does anyone know how I can gather information on planned building work around my area?

A plot of land at the back of my brother-in-law's house has just been levelled and he is wondering what is going to be built there.

I just wondered if anybody knew of any local authority websites that would give out such information.

Thanks everyone

There you go, if the land has an address it's easy otherwise find it on the map and then click on the little dot on the map.
The site has been a bit tempremental of late and so may refuse to work but at least it's worth trying.

Cheers wallbuilder.......I forgot to mention, I don't actually live in Sheffield. I live in Whitwell which is a little village between Chesterfield and Worksop. Our local council is Bolsover, with Bassetlaw (A1 Housing) also nearby.

Thanks for going to the trouble to reply

Bolsover's equivalent.

Tell me about Whitwell; my partner and I are thinking of moving in that direction, it looked like a nice quiet village.

There you go then, the Bolsover planning application site. It doesn't look as though there is a map so you have to fill in the relevant fields, I noticed that Whitewell is on the ward list

Whitwell is a really nice little village...but it all depends on what you are used to. I grew up in a smaller village just down the road, all my mates live here, I know most people (at least to say aye 'up to) and I love it. On the other hand, the missus has lived in a town all of her life and she is struggling to adapt. We have been here since December and she is just starting to settle. You have to be prepared to be stared at at first "cos your not from round 'ere". Its an old mining village so there are some parts that are rougher than others, but it is mostly a really nice little village. Even in the rougher areas, there is not really any crime or any youths hanging around on street corners.
We are close to lots of open countryside if you enjoy that kind of thing. 5 mins from Clumber Park, 15 mins from Sherwood Forest, 10 mins from Rother Valley and 2 mins from some really good pubs
