My local is 1.07 - I try my best to fill up at my boyfriends in Lancashire as it's so much cheaper there. I haven't been for a couple of weeks but when my local was 1.04 in Lancashire it was 1.01

I filled up in Rotherham last weekend and all the stations including where i filled up were £102.9 for unleaded.
The average in Sheffield is £105.9, cheapest is Shell @ £103.9
The price of fuel is getting out of hand now!

What I don't understand is why the price is higher in Sheffield than in surrounding places like Leeds, Rotherham, Barnsley, etc. Presumably it's what's called ripping off.

Hillsborough is around 105.9, Hoyland is 101.9, cheapest I've found.

What I can't understand if the fluctuation in prices between areas. I travel between Wigan, Warrington and Manchester quite a lot, and petrol is only 101.9p in Wigan, yet 103.9p or more just a dozen miles down the road.

Same here, in Maidenhead its 107.9p, but just up the road in the far more affluent Marlow its 103.9p? I suppose it depends on the distribution network and distance fromthe fuel pipeline etc.

Aren't most petrol stations franchises? I think they charge what the hell they can get away with. If your theory was true then the cheapest fuel in the country would surely be around the east coast in the hull region from the north sea.

I don't think they're franchises - the ones in my example are both Esso stations, but i couldn't tell you who actually runs them.
Its not so much of a theory as an observation, but yes like you say Hull would be happy if that was the case - although isn't that crude oil refineries for things like plastics and make up and not so much petroleum producers?
Tried finding out quickly, but nothing came up. I did find this though:
2008 Duty Increases
and this

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pipelines/mahpinfosheet.htm
So places further away from terminals may expect to see higher prices?

But he takes the same amount of fuel duty from everywhere in the country, so that does not explain fluctuations in price.
As ever, it's market forces. If people in Manchester are willing to pay 3p more per litre than people in Wigan, and it's not worth their effort to drive to Wigan and make the saving, then 3p more is what they will pay.

Hmmmm...
Morrisons Halfway
Petrol - 107.9
Diesel - 114.9
Morrisons Parkgate - Rotherham
Petrol - 105.9
Diesel - 112.9
I live near the Halfway one but visit my Mum on a weekly basis in Rotherham so I fill up there.
