Can you make your own dog food? My dog seems to hate dog food, so I was wondering if it's possible to make a food for dogs which is as good for them as dog food, but umm more appealing to very fussy dogs?
I was just talking to my friend who was telling me about how she made lots of homemade baby food and froze it, and just wondered if you can do something like that, but for dogs?
Probably not, probably another one of my stupid ideas, but I thought I'd ask anyway! I did a search and could only find a topic on homemade dog treats.
Thankies in advance for any help.

My dad used to buy low(er) -quality meats from the butchers, and he'd boil it up for his old dog who was so fussy, and turned her nose up at practically anything. (she did have a bit of a dickey tummy, in her defense...)
just be careful that the dog doesn't get hold of chicken bones.

Our dog has never had tinned dog food i cook for him every 2 to 3 days.He has steak mince it's on £3 for 2 500g packets at many places,i cook this with a couple of stock cubes and put in some veg and pasta.I do this with chicken too,a medium size fresh chicken with the veg does him for about 3 days,he's a gsd and a big one at that.Try your dog on pasta when you have some they usualy love it.

I cook food for my three, two cavaliers and a german shepherd I do it two/three times a week, Either chicken thighs and Mince, or awhole chicked which can be bought quite cheaply,I add a handful frozen peas and some carot and a couple of handfuls of rice then boil it all for about an hour, when its cooked remove the bones and I take away the skin as well, as it makes my little ones sick, then I stir in a desert spoon of wheatgerm which you can buy from the supermarket.
For breakfast they just have the meat then at tea time they have meat and mixer biscuits, mine have always had this and never had any problems, with their skin or their coat, no runs or sickness, they do really well on it.

We feed a BARF diet, so suppose you could call that home made (And can hand on heart say i know EXACTLY what our dogs are eating too)

It's me again I was thinking about your dog last night after reading the other thread, and the thought of BARF occurred to me too. It is harder work obviously than just feeding regular dog food and you have to know what you are doing to make sure your dog gets all the vitamins and everything else she needs, but it could be good fro your dog, since you're not feeding the same thing every day, and it's raw meat, bones and vegetables so I would think that even a picky dog would enjoy that! And as BlackVelvet says, you'll know exactly what your dog is eating, AND it's supposed to be very very good for dogs, as it's all natural with no added preservatives etc.
I am going to try it as soon as I have the time to learn how to do it properly
Here are some websites that came up in Google:
http://www.barfworld.com/
http://www.rawlearning.com/rawfaq.html
http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm
You can just google BARF and there's tons of information, hope that helps

Commercial dog food only came into being in the UK in the 1970's, IIRC, and dogs managed quite well before then ( when owned by responsible owners), you just don't see white poo anywhere anymore

Hi friends,
I'm new here, and I have a little question.
I found this website: I'm a link! Click me
And I've got the ebook. Great one! I have a question, is it recommended to feed my 2yo dog ONLY homemade dog food?
I think this is the most natural food the dogs can and need to eat.
Do you think am I right? It's highly recommended to look at this research about "fake" dog food.

I DID!!
Just the other week! On the pavement on our road.
I don't mean to sound so excited - I'm not a weirdo with a poo fetish!!
Back on topic:
My Mum got into the habit of cooking special dinners for her dog when he got old & poorly - chicken & rice, or chicken & pasta & olive oil. It really helped his sensitive tummy and creaky old joints.
She got so used to it she still makes 'special food' for her new young dog. She contstantly has a large tupperware tub in the fridge full of meat that she has bought on special offer and chopped up & cooked. Apparently you can often get bags of liver for about 20p. Also check out Castle Market cos a lot of butchers there sell off their out-of-date meat by the bagfull as 'dog meat' very very cheap

Well you can get meat pieces at morrisons for about 30p per 100gramms if you take out all the salty ham you usually left with chicken and beef some nice bits too.
