My 9 yr old daughter has been having nosebleeds for a couple of months now (not loads 1-2 a week) they stop quite quickly but run for no apparant reason ( she isn't a picker). Friends and colleagues( I work with young children) said not to worry they are quite common. Should I be concerned?

No - its natural. Since mankind stopped using Leeches so much, nosebleeds are now more common - it stops your head exploding

Hehe

I used to have horrific nosebleeds as a kid - kept sticking screws up my nose. I dont know why but I did ! Nowadays I get nosebleeds when tying shoelaces and generally bending over.

I'm in my 20s and get them often. Not regular but probably once a month. Mine always tend to be when I first wake up in the morning (last one was morning after the earthquake - I say the earthquake shook my blood up!), it doesn't last for long but it's pretty quick and messy.

I would take her to the doctor just to get her checked - I was once having one very, very regular and it turned out I had a spot in my nose, and everytime I rubbed my nose or sneezed, it knocked the scab off the spot which made it bleed. I'd take her just to get it checked and make sure there is nothing causing it

When I was a kid I had them regularly - apparently my Uncle had similar problems, and we generally thought it was a genetic thing.

I went to the docs a couple of times, particularly after heavy bleeds, and was told that they could cauterise a blood vessel at the top of my nose, but that it would need repeating on occasion.

In later life I've had nose bleeds due to elevated blood pressure, but I doubt that this is your daughter's problem. Grissom - I'd get your BP checked because that's when I got some of my early BP related bleeds.

When I was between 12 and 14 years old I had quite a few nose bleeds, our eldest son had them when he was young, and so did his daughter. So I thought it may be a genetic thing like JoeP. One thing that stays in my mind even today, at fourteen I had a really heavy nosebleed. My Mam ran for the doctor, I lost clots and everything, it lasted 20 minutes. Our doctor said in a matter of fact way, well if she hadn't had that nose bleed those clots would be on her brain I hated that doctor.

a punch in the nose usually does the trick to cause a nose bleed

In parts of Africa there are fly larvae called 'floor maggots' which come up out of the ground at night, and follow carbon dioxide trails to the nostrils of sleeping animals (including humans). They crawl up the nose of the sleeper and feed on the mucous membranes inside the nose, before crawling back out, fat with blood, and burrowing back into the soil. The victim wakes up with a big nosebleed and no idea what happened.

My 7 year old daughter gets them every now and again, shes also not a picker, as soon as she has one i put a blob of prescribed cream (neomycin) on her little finger and she puts the cream up her nose, no more nosebleeds. When the cream runs out the doc has told me to try vasaline t see if it works

I'd get it checked out by your doctor just to be sure

It seems odd she has them so often

I had a lot of them in my teens, and had my nose cauterised, a painless, simple procedure, and haven't had one since. They just said my capilliaries were very delicate or something and broke under pressure, like bending down etc.

I had got used to them by then though, and one time when I was 15 I was mucking out my pony's stable and a bleed started, but as I was mucky anyway I decided to carry on and clean up afterwards. As I carried on working it carried on bleeding, and because i was bending down it also ran up through my tear ducts and down my eyes and cheeks, again something that I was used to, and I knew I would be fine once I'd finished working and got cleaned up. But my sister came to find out if I was done, and had the shock of her life as I turned round to look at her with blood dripping down my face from my nose and my eyes! I'll never forget her face, it was hilarious!

I've been prone to nosebleeds most of my life, part of it's hereditary because me Dad's the same, but I suspect the fact I pick my nose doesn't help!

Can be a sign of high blood pressure, broken veins or harmless lesions that need cauterising. It can also be a sign that its being picked too much or too hard.
