After watching the initiative in Marlow on the programme yesterday I wondered. How/Why do you use your car?

edit: This was no car day, and the realisation that lots of local people used their car because it was there, not because it was necessary.

I suppose I use it to make my life easier. Its a tool in a sense, its available as and when you need it. I sometimes wonder if pay a you go charges for driving would reduce car use. WHat tangibile benefit is there for me to get on a bus to go to Meadowhall for example? Its cheaper to drive, and I don't have to wait in the cold with my bags (shopping bags, not eye bags!) No doubt somebody will point out the environmental impact which I ackowledge, but if you are willing to pay for the privilege of a car you should use it.

Or even use public transport. I know not everyone is as lucky as me and has a tram route on the doorstep but if they have it is mega reliable, regular and warm

I use mine to do 90+ mile round trip to and from work, to visit customers, run work errands, visit friends and relations anywhere in the country. I am going to France and Spain in one of them next month, I go on drives out at the weekend, sometimes I go out driving just for the sake of it because I like it, although I don't like it as much as I used. Environment, not bothered about it and that woman last night got on my wotsits.

I take my granddaughter to nursery then go on to work, I have to be there for 8.30am, I tried going by bus for a month, as I dont live that far out of town, but trying to get the buggy onto the bus in a morning, then getting off, taking her to nursery, waiting for the next bus to come past with space, by the time I get to work (usualy late) I feel stressed, so back to the car I went.

How about driving to nursery leaving the car there and bussing in?

I use mine to tow my caravan on holiday.
Never seen a bus or tram with a tow hook.
At least one that goes where I want to go.

Which is more than be said for the buses. Anyway, what's wrong with using something you've paid for?

There's no need for 30odd inch TVs, yet people buy and use them.

I'm not saying its right or wrong, just posing the question.

I found it really interesting that people would rather sit in congested traffic for 10 minutes when they could walk in 5.

Do people actually do that? I drive a lot but I'm not that daft.

I rarely use it, but I keep one because I like to get out into the countryside and the bus only takes you to the ice-cream-and-burgers tourist hotspots, not the lovely, out of the way places. Plus it's the only way to get to the relatives who live out of the way. I also use it for holidays as I stay in the UK and it's handy to have it for getting out to places like Meadowhall, IKEA or supermarkets etc. and carrying back heavy garden supplies.

But I never use it to get to the city centre as it would just be senseless living so close! Much cheaper and less hassle by bus.

I'd love it if we had pay-per-mile tax and insurance!

I use my car only for the reason that i felt that i was being unfairly discriminated against at swingers parties, i found that the best birds dont get over enthusiastic pulling my bicycle clips out of the hat.
