Flipping through some pages on the internet, I saw the headline which read something like,
' Rotherham in Financial Meltdown '....or ' Rotherham---Receivership Looms '.
For a moment my old heart gave a dangerous lurch. I thought it was referring to Rotherham, the city ! Imagine my relief when I discovered that it was only the football club in trouble.
I mean, no-one would mind if the Millers went back to milling whatever they mill, but if the beautiful, dinky little city of Rotherham suddenly went skint, we'd all have plenty to worry about !

Seriously, i've always thought about this:
Why would i ever want to visit rotherham?
Infact I did once when i first moved up this end of the country, and decided not to go again. Thats was now 5 years ago.......
What is there that would attract me there?

Mr.K. Grund hints that Rotherham hasn't got much to lose anyway and none of us would miss it all that much if it completely disappeared, say, like Pompeii.
What a terrible thing to say about the ' Jewel of South Yorkshire ' !
I mean, all these cities are getting grand titles about ' Culture ', ' Europe ' and so on------places like Liverpool, Glasgow......and for all I know, maybe Scunthorpe ?
Well, why not Rotherham too ? It might easily become the ' Florence of Northern Europe 'or the ' Rio of the Northern Hemi-sphere ' in years to come ! It just needs a bit of imagination and some moolah from the lottery.
They could have a chain of ' Ee By Gum ' bars ; a ' Rotherham McDonalds Experience ' ; a Mardi [ or Mardy ] Gras Parade down Herringthorpe Road, with Rotherham maidens performing eye-catching rumbas-----------the possibilities are all there.
If Rotherham can't become a ' Beacon of Excellence ', I don't know where else can ?

Oops, sorry ! A town ?
Well, only one ' Ee By Gum ' bar then, and a very small Mardi Gras------maybe a quick turn down Corporation Street and back ; only one float.
I suppose with that information we'll have to set our sights a bit lower. Perhaps Rotherham could be twinned with a small, industrial town, possibly in Bulgaria.......or Siberia ?
