Sorry to probably sound dim here but can anyone help with my wireless (??) set up. As i have now moved and purchased a new PC. I chose to go wireless (with Sky) with a free wireless router. I ensured my new PC had a wireless card installed however as i connected it up last night it specified that i had to run a phone cable from the router to the phone point (10m from PC) and then another cable from the router to the PC??? This doesn't sound wireless to me which means it sounds a standard modem which i had before.

Please confirm i am tech-less and let me know where i see this as wrong because it does say that everything has to be connected up by wires?? Thanks in advance.

I've not used SKy BUT I assume it's to allow you to configure the router.

When I first bought my wireless router I had to connect to it through cables to initially set it up - passwords, wirless settings, encryption - all that tomfoolery.

After that I was able to go wireless.

you need a conection from the router to the phone pointotherwise the router has no signal. You need a line from your pc to the router tempoarily whilst you set the system up. That cable is then disconnected.
Wireless means between your pc and the router.

Thanks both, it looks like i'll have to buy an extension first just to set it up. It mentions nothing of that in the manuals. thanks again

While this subject is up, can anyone tell me how to stop other people using my wireless connection please. Just fitted a wireless router so I can go on internet upstairs but have heard I need to protect it from outside (of my house) sources. Sorry for jumping in on thread.

Hi Scottish Dude,
you need to setup Encryption on the router and on your P.C There are two versions WEP and WPA. WEP will stop casual attempts at accessing your network this can easily be cracked so if possible you should use WPA. How it is configured will depend on your router
