I'm afraid I can't help help regarding your geneology studies, but I know how you feel about Netherthorpe.

You could try this - but no promises. Click on 'N', scroll down to Netherthorpe and 'search'. There are 100s of pictures there which may be of some interest? Hold your cursor over the picture and it says where the photograph has been taken.

Thanks, I think it's an excellent site for nostalgics and I'd commend it to anyone's "favourites".

My mum and her family came from Wentworth Street; number 99 and 97 and i think even 101.
One one the tower blocks that was built in that area is called 'Wentworth'.
They moved to Gleadless Valley in the early 60's when they knocked all the houses down.

Wentworth Street was in Upperthorpe ( S6 ) NOT in Netherthorpe ( S3 )
See if this helps.

My Grandparents lived at number 91 Wentworth Street, and were also moved to Gleadless Valley. I had several relatives ( uncles, aunts, cousins), all in that part of the street - on both sides, and I lived around the corner in Burlington Street. We also had relatives in Edward Street flats ! I also remember the names Elsie and Barbara Foster !
Its a small world.

Yes!!! I've found it on my 1903 Ordnance Survey!! Bond Street was just off Wentworth Street - not sure which end the shop was at though!! It was Nos 1 - 3 Bond Street.... I'd love to see a picture of it!! I've just trawled PictureSheffield using the above clues, but no luck!!!

Are the numbers not shown on the map? I'd imagine the numbers would start at the end nearest the city centre (numbering convention usually works that way even numbers on the right, odds on the left as you look down the street with your back to the city.-If the road isn't a cul-de-sac, that is hehe)
There used to be a road directory, available at the local studies library which showed where each road led off another, and how the numbering runs.

Hmmm.... the only number I can see is "278" on the junction of Wentworth St, Bond St and Fawcett Street (which is opposite Bond Street) - I just don't know which street it refers to out of the 3!!!!
Bond Street runs from the North West (on Crookesmoor Road) to South East (on Wentworth Street), then Fawcett Street opposite going down to Upper St Phillips Road... So I guess Nos 1 - 3 would be on the Wentworth Street corner...
Or has my sense of direction just gone totally haywire??
Next time I'm in the vicinity, I may just have to pop in to the library....!!!

I know the Fawcett St numbers ran from the "city" end (St Philips Rd end). My grandparents lived on there, in the low numbers, until the clearances of the late 1950s, and, further on toward crookesmoor road, on Fawcett Street, another member I used to converse with on here used to live, on the section called the "hollow" (t' oller) and their number was in the Hundreds.

Bond Street went uphill, fromWentworth Street ( at 90 degrees ), was crossed ( half way up ) by Martin Street, and at the top of the hill, by Oxford Street ( I have sledged down it ! ). It then continued slightly downhill to Crookesmoor Road.
At the Wentworth Street ( facing the end of Fawcett Street ) junction, there was a pub ( I am not sure what it was called - maybe Wentworth Arms ). which was probably number 278 Wentworth Street ( my grandparents house was number 91, on the opposite side of the street, and much lower down ).
On the other corner of Bond St. / Wentworth St. - the left, looking up Bond St. I do remember a small shop, which almost certainly will have been numbers 1 - 3. I don't remember what it sold, but apart from occasional glances in the window, I never went in. I was either a child or a teenager at the time, so if it was a 'Drapers Shop', then I wouldn't would I. I did pass it almost every day for about 15 years.
Hope this helps. I think that we may have pinned it down ! Good Luck !

Thanks GLOS, I think my grandparents left there around 1940 ish... I don't know what happened to it then - it may have been selling something totally different!!!! My 2x great grandparents lived there before them - according to the censuses!! - so it was occupied by one family member or another since the 1870s...

My grandma and granddad, Elsie and Jack Thompson had a sweetshop/ tobacconists on 16 Bond Street which was on the right hand corner of Martin St, looking down Bond St to the Infirmary. It was a good job they only had one child,( my father ) as most of the ground floor was taken up by the shop and their living quarters comprised a tiny, windowless back room containing a sink, a range, some builtin cupboards, 2 chairs, a small table and surprisingly a radiogram.
They were fortunate to have a toilet to themselves in the courtyard behind - does anyone know if this was true of most corner houses.
They were also rehoused to Gleadless Valley in the late 50s to a 1st floor retirement flat in a block on Ironside walk which overlooked a primary school. Grandma thought it was great as the flat was clean, light and airy with indoor facilities but granddad wasn't so suited.
Does anyone know if people had the choice of where they moved to or did the council decide.
