It seems supermarkets don't sell them? I assume a butcher will sell veal, but are there any that don't?
Thanks.

You can get both these ingredients in Waitrose (dried porcini mushrooms at any rate). The cuts of veal are a bit limited though.

Ahh right, I never go down that way that's why I didn't know! Is there anywhere closer I could get these from?

Dried Porcini mushrooms are available in every good supermarket. Veal is much harder to come by.

By far the least expensive place to get dried porcini is Beanies- great big bags for about £4. I can't actually say that I've seen veal anywhere recently. Would your local butcher not buy some in for you?

I don't use a butcher so I wouldn't have a clue! Is there anything I could use to replace the veal? It is to go with beef.

dont be put off!!!! try this for the other side.
crating is illegal in this country and its better that these calves raised as a byproduct of the dairy industry are given a decent (albeit short life) rather than being shot and put in dog food or exported to the continent where animal wlefare is less of a priority and less stringently regulated.
as your local butcher for british veal- it is available, we just need to ask for it!

I assume you watched "Cook yourself thin" last night??
I also am in the market for veal and dried porcini mushrooms.
some of those dishes looked stunning - and very few cals.

It is somewhat off topic, but an interesting debate none the less. SophieC's point is also extremely valid. In fact, by eating british veal we would be doing more for animal welfare than boycotting it completely.
Also, if there were a good British veal trade then this might reduce the amount of calves reared in very poor conditions for veal abroad.
Anyway, back to the topic in hand, I'm afraid I don't know where you might buy some, but I would just try calling some local butchers.

I apologise if I upset anyone, I have never had veal before and don't know anyone who has and I hadn't seen the stories or know anything about what has been going on till I read that link.
Yes I did watch cook yourself thin I am going to try the root veg mash too. I hate eating the same things all the time, it's so boring and I love cooking! Maybe I ought to swop the veal for something else, any suggestions???

Don't swap it unless you can't find british veal!

Veal is young beef, the nearest in colour and taste would be a lean escalope of pork. Buy a lean piece of pork fillet and bash it out with a meat hammer or rolling pin. If you get really lean meat to start with it shouldn't really have any more fat or calories than the veal.

On the issue of cruelty veal is ok as long as it's rose veal. If it's white veal it means it's been kept in crates to stop muscle development which keeps flesh pale.
You can order rose veal online, just type rose veal into google.

just an update- i saw dried porchini mushroom in morrisons at hillsborough last night- they are definitely about.
i was going to ask in my local butchers for you last night about the veal to see if they had ever been asked for it, or if they could perhaps recommend anywhere in sheffield- but im afraid they were shut by the time i got there.
what is the recipe and is it online anywhere? im intrigued now.
