The 2012 Olympics, which were pitched at a cost of under three billion, will now cost another billion on top of the last estimate of about nine and a half... it turns out that the money raised by selling the land after the event, was based on prices continuing to rise by 20% per annum for another twenty years. They've now admitted that this was an insanely overoptimistic assumption, and reduced their expected return accordingly. (Link here)

Now I was one of those delighted to hear we were bididng for, and that we won, the right to host these games. But at ten billion pounds, I think the time's come to hand them back - no amount of international prestige is worth this much.

Funding for the arts is now being taken away to be used for the Olympics. Absurd.

I started to worry when they came up with the bright idea of financing some of it with scratchcards.

Oh dear.

The bottom line is that once you are accepted you have to fulfill that commitment and that's when all the "little white lies" start to surface. It seems they haven't learned anything from Wembley or to a point going as far back as the Student Games in Sheffield. Nobody wants to lose face on the World Stage, no matter what the cost.

We did bail out on the world athletics championships, which would've been a damn sight cheaper than these.

Let's not belittle the Olympic ideal; I think it's great that every 4 years the world's top athletes compete in a tournament to find out which country has the best performance-enhancing drugs.

With you on that one. They should all be able to take what ever the hell they like, maybe a few more people would bother watching it then!
