Sothall is IN Beighton. I believe it is snobbery that makes people say that they live in Sothall (new posh houses) rather than Beighton (old village). Also Sothall is pronounced "Sue-te"; I can accept "Suthell", but anyone who tries to call it "South Hall" wants shooting!
Regards,
Spacehopper.

I always pronounce it 'suthall', not poncy Soth Hall lardee dar!
Sothall is not in Beighton mate, beighton is the old village. Sothall was the new housing estate created alongside Beighton.
Sothall is it's own area, as is Mosborough, Hackenthorpe, Westfield, Beighton, Owlthorpe and Waterthorpe.
I can prove it... just need to look at a map!

So I'm a snob for saying I live in Sothall which is ANOTHER area to Beighton?
So saying we're from south yorkshire rather than Derbyshire... is that snobery too? Cos Sheffield was part of North Derbyshire a few hundred years ago. Old maps dontmean poop I'm afraid.
Boundaries change... I live in Sothall...which isn;t Beighton! Bu so what... Beighton's a well nice area. I wouldn't mind either! Just facts are... Sothall is indeed different!

Na Na George, you got me all wrong.
I live in Longley and i said its Dabouncer that lives in Beighton, but wether DB lives in Sothall (Southall)or Beighton my point is that he would be a good start to give reliable information on the area Spoonz has just moved into.

So I'm a snob because I live in Sothall? Not Beighton... SOTHALL.
Sothall is seperate to Beighton, look on ANY map of Sheffield, ANY postal letter and you'll see the same. Sothall not Beighton.
I would gladly say I lived in beighton if it were true, but it aint so deal with it. Boundaries change as I've stated earlier.
You've obviously got some issues here that i wont open up, it seems to be sore point with you... probably some childhood psychological thing
I couldn't give a rats, if it helps you sleep at night associating Sothall with Beighton as the same area... so be it mate. i have no problems with that.
But please dont refer to me as a snob because my opinion happens to differ to yours. Besides I'm Originally from Gleadless Valley or 'the slums' so posh/snob I aint!

hopefully will get up at the weekend for the first of nodoubt many reccies to the area. looking for a 3, hopefully 4 bed and have around 170-200k to spend. currently live on a new estate and nodoubt will end up in another. ( i beleive the area we are looking at has many new estates ) . i have a few q's that hopefully someone can help with.
1. i have read many posts on here talking of the benifits of being west of the center of sheffield. would it be fair to then presume that there are many "undesirable" area's to the south and east bordering up to the new estates around the crystal peak area. if so could someone give me some pointers.
2. one of our main concerns is a good secondary school. apparently the aston comp is the "local" catchment school in the area ( for aston / aughauton) anyway. does anyone know how good this school is ( don't completely trust just loooking a league tables ). also is this the local secondary for the beighton area.
3. are there any high crime anomilies in the area. the general stats show it to be around average, but these are fairly generic and do not allow for "blackspots". again, any pointers appreciated
3. if, plan "A", to look at the crystal peaks area fall's through for whatever reson, can someone suggest another area ( we don't want to be in the center of the city ) . obviously west side seems to be the general concensus but i don't know if we are in the ballpark financially with 200k to get into a good area with a good school. /
plz add any other advice you may think useful...
cheers

I've lived at Aston now for 15 years and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
My daughter went to Aston Comp, got good A level grades, and went on to Uni. As with any school of this size, it has its undesireables but the headteacher Mr Light keeps a good school.
As far as the Aston area is concerned, I don't know of any particular crime blackspots.
Hope this helps

If you're looking at Beighton, Woodhouse is probably worth a glance too. We have a train station that gets you to town in 10mins, Meadowhall in 20.
Use 'search' to find loads of info on Woodhouse.

I know a few people that went to Aston and they turned out okay. Anecdotes are only of so much use though.
Aston is pretty good in terms of road links being close to both the beighton bypass and the M1.
I think (i could be wrong) that Beighton must feed a different comprehensive. I know that when my Mum grew up there they went to Weston Park (I think that's what it was called) but it's closed now. Beighton might feed to Eckington Comprehensive.
I'd have said on balance that Aston was the nicer or more desirable of the two.

They're actually building a new Westfield school over the next few years.
I used to live in Aston and went to Aston Comp. There was a bus full of kids from Beighton came to Aston. Aston is a Rotherham school, Westfield is a Sheffield school.
Aston/Aughton are nice areas, there is some crime but I don't it's any worse than anywhere else. I don't know of any particular blackspots, although if I was looking for a house for myself, I'd probably avoid those that back onto recreation grounds.
Local shopping facilities at Swallownest are quite good (although Tesco didn't get planning permission ). You're close to Crystal Peaks and the M1/M18, and about 40 minutes drive from the city centre in rush hour, 20 minutes otherwise. You're close to Rother Valley and Ulley Country Parks.
Which area of Aston/Aughton are you looking at?
Bubble, if you want, send me a PM with any other questions about the area.

lots of good info here to mull over. thks for the offer andy. i think i may have more q following our trip up, hopefully this weekend.
after looking at the map again last night. i was wondering what the area's that butt up to the beighton / aston / aughton where like ? small towns swalowed up in sheffields past expansion or council estates
noticed the names, handsworth, woodhouse & mosborough which definatley look like borough's.
then there was also the small villages/towns of eckington, kilamarsh, wales, and treeton.
just wondering about the outlying area's fro a "neighbours point of view"

Woodhouse is a large village, thank you. Many sandstone villagey properties, but much in the way of newer development too. A good mix.
It has the obligatory (in Sheffield) council estate embedded in it too, known as the Badger Estate.
We find it's in just the right spot for getting into town and getting away from it all. Look at your map again. We're surrounded by some beautiful countryside, acessed by a 2 minute walk.
