Just wondering where I stand after my car has just been involved in a hit and run. I have just got a new car and my old one has been parked on the road uninsured while I'm waiting for it to be sold. Some taxi driver has just crashed into the side causing several hundred pounds worth of damage and drove off again, i have the car details, the registration plate and also an independent witness who also managed to take down the details. I really need to report this to the police but I'm not sure where i would stand with having no insurance. The city council are not prepared to give me any details about the driver and so the only way would be police involvement but i don't want any points or a fine when I haven't actually driven the car. Can anyone help with what the law says on uninsured vehicles and does the law only apply to moving vehicles?

If you report an accident you will be required to produce an insurance cert.
If the car is on a public road it needs to be insured.
im afraid your best bet is to get it shifted fast

if you report it you will be nicked for no insurance get a big fine and i think six points on you liscence , either way you wont get a baloon for the damage to your car . two ways to look at this ,do i let a dangerous driver get away with it ?. or do i have him nicked and get myself nicked at the same time ?. sorry but thats about the best i can tell you .

I can't offer any advice, but I can offer my sympathy. I know it shouldn't be on the road uninsured, but that's a real bu**er! Best of luck.

you just going to have to swallow this yourself and learn from it to not have an uninsured car on the road- unlucky.

I've only just changed the insurance to my new car, I haven't driven the old one since, would I still get points even though I wasn't driving?

the only way you can "legally" pursue the offender is via insurance. if you didn't have cover for the parked vehicle - you can't claim. if you report it to the police , they may question your non insurance and yes you would be liable for points.
to be on the road - the vehicle must be MOT'd, taxed and insured.

So lets get this right when you sell it you presumably were going to take the buyer out for a test drive and you were going to do that with no insurance then?????

Even if you did report this and found the taxi driver, I doubt you would get a payout because any claim would be seriously affected by the illegal status of your own car at the time.
