So if a club can get a liscence for a 'gay' bar does this mean it could get one for a 'black' only or 'disabled' only club etc. If you guys want to be treated as equals like most of you say you do why do you want to segregate yourselves away from straight people on a night out. Is that not the same as straight people saying we want a straight only club with no gay people allowed entry? Im just trying to get this clear in my own head as i dont really understand the 'gay' scene. Pardon my ignorance.

Gay bars do not operate a GAY ONLY door policy, it's amazing how many straight people on here seem to think gay bars automatically turn away straight people at the doors! AS IF!!

Do people have their sexuality stamped on their heads or something, how could a policy like this ever be enforced by door staff?!

Wake up for god's sake, sorry but stupid ignorant comments like this just rile me.

I don't think it's that people want gay clubs where no straight people would be allowed (who would lend us lip gloss? (joke)). It's not about segregation.

It's more about going somewhere for a night out where you can:
a) be yourself
b) be openly affectionate with someone of the same (or opposite) sex and
c) dance to Kylie (joke)
without any fear of homophobic incidents. (Not that that really happens much in Sheffield hopefully).

Also being gay is about who you have sex with so it makes sense to go to a gay club rather than having to waste time asking people if they are gay (if that is what you are after on a night out......)

It would be great if Sheffield had more of a variety of gay nights for all people to go to.

b) is the only thing I wouldn't do in "straight" pub/club, having said that I have in the past. You have to gauge the general atmosphere and then decide how good/bad an idea it is.

I can't grasp this concept that you can only be yourself when surrounded by other gay people, what do you do all day at work, pretend to be someone else ?

(not having a go at you Simon BTW)

It's true you just need to assess the situation as to whether it's going to be ok for you to kiss another guy. I have to say there's loads of places in Sheffield where gay people wouldn't be worried.

When I say be yourself I mean if you want to go out wearing your mothers underskirt and a fruit bowl on your head....etc you can without fear.

Seriously I mean you don't have to worry at all about the fact that you are gay/lesbian/a transvestite or bi etc etc etc etc (endless list) in a gay bar and some people might feel uncomfortable sometimes in a straight bar.

I wasn't referring to myself. I am comfortable wherever I go. (Unless my heels are hurting (Joke!))

I pretend to work all day at work.
x

I shall try not to go on too much about this, although I have very strong words about this, I shall keep it to a minimum

Why should we hide our sexuality in a str8 bar, I go in str8 bars alot with friends from work (who know I am gay), I be myself in any pub, why hide it.

I dont walk into a str8 pub and automatically act/turn str8.

I also prentend to work all day as well.

I'm not trying to speak for all of gay kind and say gay people feel they have to hide their sexuality in a straight bar or that gay people only go in gay bars and never anywhere else.

Being yourself to me means being free to do whatever you want to do and I was trying to show Lucky_13 who said he didn't understand the gay scene why some people might prefer to go to a gay bar sometimes.

I hope nobody ever hides who they are and I don't think I wrote anything to suggest people do.....

I've been to plenty of straight places where friends have politley asked me to *butch it up* lol I basically point blank refused and continued to be the usual me and i survived.

I've even been out on 2 pub crawls in handsworth (home of the pub fight!) and not had a single problem but I still find myself on edge and not being able to completley relax

I was wondering why VIP were not a sponsor anymore, their logo had vanished ...

..... just read that it finishes on 1st September ,..... which is a shame .. nice venue for a gay bar, not what we are used to in Sheffield ...

... such a shame it was a Thursday night.

Welcome to the forum dannyfuel.

There is a already a thread about gay pubs in Sheffield. Try doing as search. But it looks like you're the only person to have heard this rumour so far. What's your source?
