You know how we often have threads that turn into my console is better than yours tiffs? Well I think we should have a proper one. So, which was or is the best console ever?
So this doesn't turn in to a 360 vs PS3 row, it has to be purely on the quality of the games and the way the current technology was used ie, graphical ability at the time.
For me I think it had to be the Megadrive.
Cheap, had some great versions of some great games and I really admired the way Sega tried to allow more capabilities to the machine via add-ons (even though they did usually flop.).

I loved the Dreamcast, it had some great games (I'm still waiting for a new version of Rez, one on the wii with the wii remote would be soon cool!) MSR was one of my fav games on it along with the shenmue ones (I still prefer MSR over the PGR games on the xbox!
Also its dial-up internet was cool, i remember racking up hugh bills for what was the poorest webbrowser ever but was my first internet experience (and some of the porn URL's we swapped at school were long! and took ages on the controller to type them in)

My first console was the SNES, definitely one of the best of the retro age.

Non-geeky intervention: I remember one from the early 80s; it had wood panelling, was roughly the size, shape and weight of a large breeze block, and the games came on things that looked a bit like video cassettes, that you slotted into the top. I can't remember what it was called, but the car racing game was superb .

Who you calling geek? iPod girl.
I went and did the silly thing and bought myself the Amstrad GX 4000, not one shop in Sheffield sold games for it.

the mega drive was good but the master system had games built in, and the snes is a classic too. the ps was great, the xbox seemed alright. the newish ones dont seem to offer much extra, maybe the wii (but i havent played one), the ps3 needs gta5, worms2007(iraq, afghanistan, american highschools and sudan edition) and some gta style multi sports game

Indeed Alex Kidd was a great game that was built in to the Master System.

im going to have to go for either the n64 for revolutionising gaming with the analogue stick and dragging platformers into 3D or the dreamcast. microsoft robbed a lot of the pad design, it had fantastic games and was criminally underated! and i remember using the web browser. think it was the first online console too.

Dreamcast all the way, you could do much MUCH more with it than just play games...

For me it has to be the Megadrive. That era of gaming saw a lot of developments and pushing of boundaries, and was the golden age of gaming. The SNES showed some great moments too, but the MD wins it for me - if only because SEGA didn't restrict developers and limit what they could get away with (see Mortal Kombat - the sanitised SNES version missed the point totally). Even now I love playing on the old classics such as the Sonic series, Alex Kidd, Road Rash, the Strike series, etc.

N64 from the consoles probably.
PS gets a worthy mention purely for taking gaming mainstream
Best era for innovation in games probably the 8-bit Amstrads/Commodore etc.
