Hi,

I have just finished a 6 week course on the above at the Palgrave Centre. We have really enjoyed it and I would thoroughly recommend trying it if you can.

Babybell has only do a few signs back so far but she is really trying & loves watching me trying to remember them all.

Has anyone else doing signing? Would love to hear what you think. I am going to get the Joseph Garcia book so I can keep it up.

I found out about this one on here (thanks Kerry) but I am sure there are others in Sheffield. the number for Palgrave is 0114 2503060 if you want to enquire.

Its sign language for babies who are both hearing and non hearing, much the same as British Sign Language for hearing impared. It helps learning and development, communication, bonding and its fun!! Something Special on cbeebies is very similar, only its makaton. (slightly different version of sign) XX

My nursery teaches it...very helpful for early communication. Cosycub could let us know when he was hungry or thirsty - and which, exactly - well before he could speak. Also when he wanted more of something, all sorts. I'd definitely recommend it.

We have a waiting list at moment but as we are running two courses a week its going down quite quick. We have one at Early Days, Palgrave Rd and one at The Meadow CC, Shirecliffe Road. If you PM me your name and contact no Honeyb35 will put you down for course. XXX Kerry

PS. There is no charge and refreshments provided.

This is excellent my friend learnt sign language at college and now she looks after her nephew she has started teaching it to him.Its a fantastic skill to have, my daughters grandparents are both deaf as is her aunty (my ex partners parents and sister) and she is so clever at it. She amazes me. I just thinks its another form of communication and a skill that can help them in later life.

I am seriously thinking of learning myself, I watch Marie (our baby signer) and I feel so envious of her skill and very frustrated at myself for struggling to communicate effectively with some of our non hearing parent/carers.

She puts me to shame with my over exaggerated lip movements LOL XX

Palgrave Road, Parson Cross. Its Early Days Children's Centre but everyone just calls it Palgrave, you should be able to find it on Web if you put in Early Days or NCH Family Centre, X

Hi

I run "Sing and Sign" classes in Nether Edge and also Todwick (about 10 minutes from Chrystal Peaks).

If you're interested in baby signing generally, then the Sing and Sign website - singandsign.com - is a really useful resource. Alteratively, you can contact me about local classes.

Whatever route you take, whether it is joining a class, buying a DVD, using your own knowledge of BSL etc. then I really recommend that you give it a try. It is a wonderful way to communicate with your baby before they can talk (and very handly when they are starting to talk but you can't understand every word they are saying!).

I did it with my first child and it worked quite well, although there tended to be a hang over into the time when he could communicate verbally and still signed with it. We got a few odd looks.

Also re the original post Luybell I look after babybell one day a week and she has started doing some signs she does water, nan gone etc it is so good seeing her do it. She is 14 months and did the signing course about 4 months ago.
