Video Editing Freeware? any pointers

I'm using Cyberlink director express but its rubbish. It doesn't keep the sound files from my home movies. Any suggestions for something that will please.

In recent times I have found that it is a waste of time trying to do any video editing or rendering unless you have an extremely powerful modern PC with a dual core processor. Or even better a power Mac.

With an older Athalon class PC, the audio goes out of sink or the program stutters or freezes and it can take over 24hours to do a render. There just isn't anything like enough processing power.

I have a dual core processor ta very much Muddy. So a vob converter if anyone knows of one that doesnt slap a water mark all over like the first two I tried would be nice

I've had no prolems editing videos on a PC (which I've been doing for over 12 years - indeed, the first PC I used for video editng was a 333Hz Celeron

Again, no problems here (Athlon XP 2400+). Maybe it's the software used (I have a few old titles - for win 98 - that have very low memory usage/footprints)?

C'mon guys bring me some magic

I can't flipping find one. Background stuff, I have been sent the dvd of our floody stuff and the day trip to Scarborough on DVD as shown originally on Look North, I want to chop it into the funday video but as its VOB its a pain.

DVD Decryptor should/may work

. Nope. It won't.

Have a look @ AutoGK which can convert VOB files (though I've never tried it)..

here is a decoder/converter which will get it into a more managable format for editing and it's free (It's not so good on Vista tho)

Vob files are pretty much just mpg files. If they're unencrypted (as in, not from a commercial DVD), you can just copy them to your hard drive and change the file extension to .mpg.

Then they should play okay in programs like windows media player. The files might be quite large, but you might have better luck finding an editor.

Virtualdub MPEG-2 is a good bet as it reads vob files natively. There should be plenty of tutorials around, too.

Until very recently, there was actually a free version of AVID (http://www.avid.com/products/freedv/index.asp) - i stumbled upon it too late unfortunately (and was surprised i'd not heard about it before - after all, everyone likes a freebie), but you never know, there might still be copies lurking about the web...

It's not that great unless you're importing from a DV cam - trust me, I tried!

I use Auto Gordian Knot to convert VOB files to AVI files.
It's pretty easy to use and generally quite reliable.
It depends what you actually want to do but AGK does produce high quality results. To download just click on one of the download sites on this page.

I have used AGK for a number of months now, and like any new unfamiliar program it might seem dauting to use at first, but really it is pretty simple to use once you've done it successfully.

If you're making a copy of a DVD then you can just burn the VOB files onto a blank DVD, as long as you have associated the IFO and BUP
