I can't say that I've seen a new speed bump for ages. Has somebody at the Council decided that they aren't such a great idea after all?

I hope so! No matter how I negotiate them slow/fast or in between they always seem to throw the car about. They just cause damage to tyres, steering components, suspension etc.

I agree nationalist they don`t stop the joyrider, but I don`t think this was what they were meant for, then again you probably already knew that. I hate them they make me

Don't think they were intended for joyriders maybe to slow traffic down perhaps?

What gets me is these cushion speed bumps that have drivers zig zagging across the road to get a smoother aim at it, for instance, Southey green road already a dangerous road but now even more so!

The ones on St Phillips Road in Upperthorpe have got to be the humpiest speed humps around... unless you know better.

The govt. grants that funded them have probably all been spent for this financial year

we had 17(pairs) "concrete" speed bumps installed on minor road about 2 years ago.
in the first half of this year 8 of them were removed and tarmaced over because they kept lifting and damaging the road.
we have now been informed that all 17 are now to be replaced with raised sections of road, some accomodating zebra crossings.

now if that isn't a waste of at least 1/2 a million pound i don't know what is.

Speeds humps installed earlier this year on Eckington Road. Some of them ones where wheels go over each side, then a few of them awful ramps.

I wish!.

They've just installed a whole host of new ones at Catcliffe.

I've had to change my route into work because I can't get over them in my car (pie eater in a sports car!). Never mind an extra couple of miles each way (1/4 gallon of fuel per day) never added much to congestion or pollution did it

I don't really mind speed bumps (the proper ones that you drive up, along and then down), but the speed pillows are a real problem. I know that they're supposed to keep to a standard height and width on these, but they rarely seem to.

The only reason for using speed 'pillows' instead of proper 'bumps', in my opinion, is that of cost.

Proper speed bumps (should) force ALL road users to slow down, speed pillows don't tend to slow motorcycles or vehicles with a track wide enough to pass over the pillow.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the best solution would be to have variable speed limits outside schools etc, enforced by average speed cameras (SPECS system, not GATSO or TRUVELO)

Scrap the speed humps and get unemployed people to simply lie down in the road for 35 hours a week. That way they'd be contributing something to society in return for their benefits.

And you'd get the satisfaction of running over them...

Err, no. You did not HAVE to change your route; you could have traded your car for one that is capable of getting over the bumps. You CHOSE not to.

Now let's see... which is more hassle, changing your route or buying a new car. Tough one to call. Why should he have to change his car because the council obstructs the road? I'm amazed you didn't suggest he moved house instead.

You are quite right, I didn't 'have' to change my route to work, in fact some days I don't. I sometimes take one of my other cars to work.

Although on sunny days I do prefer taking the TVR in, with the roof down. In fact I don't really mind the extra distance i have to travel, as I've usually got a great big grin on my face from the wonderful (105Db) noise the big thirsty V8 engine makes

I have been thinking about trading the 3.5l TVR in for a 4.5 with a little more ground clearance.

Learn to read, hey? He doesn't HAVE to change his car. He has complete freedom of choice what he does.
