Living in various houses over the years, I've noticed that there is generally a 'cut off point' of 'neighbourly communication'
People most often seem to talk to the neighbours extending to two houses either side, but more often than not pretty much ignore anyone further on.
Likewise with the houses opposite - two houses either side, then ignore.
Is it the same where you live, or do you know everyone on the street?

A few years ago I knew most people on our road we all chatted and got on well, most have now moved away and the newcomers will say hello but thats it.

I grew up in a house on a row of terraces, with similar terraces opposite, and in those days everyone spoke to everyone else.
It changed in later years though.

Other way about for us - we know loads of people up and down the street but the bloke next door won't even look at us let alone say hello! It must be quite difficult really to be so rude, so we just shrug it off!

I live on a little Brookside type cul de sac so I have two to the side two to the other side and the five opposite who i talk to but after that i've no idea who they are. My neighbours are just right - apart from the recent drug dealers who lived under me but at the moment there is noone there which suits me fine!
We help each other out occasionally but don't live in each others' pockets generally have a chat in the street and i occasionally have a coffee or a glass of wine with them.

There's an old thread about this. I still say the same thing. Mine doesn't extend very far. Especially when there are already "run ins" with them.
A friend parked his car in front of their house and that has kicked up controversy already. So I think it is best to stay away from people like that.
I only talk to my next door neighbour who had been kind to me, and she met my mother and we get on well together. She's an old lady living on her own, and I make a greater effort with her. On the other side is a new family, and other than just the odd hello, our lives don't cross very much at all. So, I don't really make an extra effort or anything.
I don't normally give such great efforts unless I know that I will settle there for years and years. I rather make friends and those who I know have mutual feelings for you. No point pouring emotions on someone who will not actually reciprocate the same.

Same here. It all depends if people are about at the same time in flats. I've said hello to a couple of people but no idea of names etc.

We are still relatively new around here (18 months) and still don't know alot of the neighbours, but one by one, when they see us, they say "hello", and vice versa..
The next door neighbours on either side have always been chatty..
We do have a couple of 'funny' one's though..
I think they look upon us as being intruders on their road and they look down their noses at us and don't even acknowlegde us when we say "morning" or anything..
Snooty cows they are..

The street I live on is dead friendly.
Going one way I know the names of and speak to our Next door neighbour, and know the names of 4 out of the next 8 neighbours and say hello, etc to all of them. Even know which football team the majority support.
Going the other way, I get on well with our other next door neighbours (don't know their names though), say hello to the next one and often get my ear bent by the elderly couple three doors away.
Opposite is a similar story (what they're called, what they do/did for a living).
Our garden backs onto two gardens. We regularly talk to the neighbours behind.
I could go on...
We've lived in our house two years!

We talk to the bloke next door, not through choice but because i'm sure he has my back door wired up to an alarm in his house. I cant open it with out he pops out, I'm not anti-social but it really is getting on my nerves.

To be honest, this is probably the friendliest road we've lived on - we moved in at the end of a year and got Christmas cards from about 5-6 people we had barely talked to.
Is it because its a no through road? I once heard that 'closes' have more of a community feel to them and everyone gets a bit more involved.
Do you and the neighbours do Christmas cards?

It's probably a significant factor. If you live on City Road, the vast majority of people who walk past your house are not neighbours; if walking down your street leads to absolutely nowhere except the other houses on it, then everybody who goes past must live on the street, or be visiting someone who does.
