Over the last month when i switch the computer on it sometimes does not load 1st time. This happens about 1 in 4 times,so i hold the start button in till it goes dead then press again, which is when it will usually start. Is this a sign that things are getting old. Its about 4 years old running Windows XP.

A possibility might be that your Hard Drive is starting to fail. When you load up your computer and it fails to boot, do you hear clicking sounds? If so, then it might be time to invest in a new hard-drive.

If you have Windows 'Restore' activated try restoring the system to a date before the trouble started.
