I can't afford one so don't tell me to go buy one of those hugely expensive packages

At the moment I'm using an adobe photoshop starter edition thing that has absolutely no special bits on at all.

I want to download a programme (if possible) that will allow me to merge photos, change them to sepia, brush out blemishes and possibly make small projects etc.

There are a few free downloads (and yes, I have virus protection) on the net but don't know which are worth downloading...

Any ideas?

GIMP...

it is a free alternative to Photoshop (photoshop being probably the best photo editor you will find)

can be found at http://www.gimp.org/

GIMP, or GIMPshop in particular, is great.

Have you tried the "simpler" Picasa, or similar though?

You need to upload the pics you want to share to a server somewhere (eg. flickr or photobucket) and give people to the link to there.

Back to the original question, I use Picasa to organise/manage pics - does a decent enough job. It can do some basic editing (colour adjustments, cropping....) but any 'real' editing I use the Gimp.

Combination of Picasa/Gmp works well for me.
