I bought a Goodmans a couple of years ago, had all sorts of problems with it so. i emailed Goodmans explaining the problems i was having.
Answer 'faulty take it back to the place of purchase', so i did and i got my my money back.
A friend of mine also purchased a Goodmans dvd recorder from Argos and had problems with it ,as well problems getting a refund when she took it back.

we bought a Sony one (tbh, goodmans is cheap stuff -- its the new amstrad imho -- sorry :\ ) any ways.. we have a Sony one and cant fault it, we have had it almost 2 years now (or it could be just over 2 cant exactly remember) and we havent had an issue with it so in other words...

Dont buy cheap, dont buy an £80/£100 one, spend ATLEAST £150 on one, go for LG, Sony, Phillips, Panasonic, avoid Alba, Goodmans, Bush, avoid the even cheaper Durabrand types and you should be good...

I've got a Panasonic recorded with built in Freeview and I really like it, much better than a VCR.

Using DVD-RAM discs you can even record something and watch something else on the DVD at the same time like a hard-disc recorder, which I think is dead clever.

As Ghozer points out, you quite literally get what you pay for.

For more information on DVD recorders have a look at: http://www.dvdburners.org.uk/

I have two machines - a Liton and a *mind goes blank - an age thing!*. Had problems with the Liton - ended up with HDD failure after 13months! However - paid a firm £60 and they collected/replaced/delivered the machine wit ha further 3m guarantee. Both machines are brill despite the one hicup.

Ditch the VHS and dive in.

I bought a cheap (no name) one and it failed....returned it, got money back....got a goodman's (thinking it would be OK) it failed....returned it, got money back.....those two machines were about £80 each and weren't up to the job.

So, spent £160 on a bottom of the range Panasonic - what a difference, what a delight....it has all the ususal stuff on it BUT also has DVD RAM facility - if you like gadgets this one's for you.....you can record and watch the beginning of the recording whilst it still records.....you can edit it (take out all the adverts, chop out all the bits you don't need).....I am impressed with mine....and like they say you get what you pay for.

The Panasonic shop on Pinstone Street is helpful and you can get RAM discs there for about fifteen quid for ten.. well worth it. :

If you have Sky+ is there any benefit in having a DVD recorder (apart from being able to take the DVD wherever you like)?

In my opinion , it's better to invest in one that has a HDD (hard disc drive) because recording directly onto DVD media can sometimes lead to missed recordings. When the program is recorded to the HDD, it can be burnt to DVD if needed.

I have a Pioneer DVD & HDD recorder which does everything, it cost me a fortune about three years ago but is well worth it, i have sky+ as well, so i'm recording everything from Glastonbury onto sky+, then editing out the best bits onto my Pioneer HDD & make a compilation onto DVD if i want to, it's great.

I have an Inverto Freeview with hard drive and bought a Liteon DVD Recorder to burn things I wanted to keep. The Liteon froze when fast forwarding over x8 so it went back. I now have a Philips which cost a bit more but has behaved impeccably.
