Best service is the train. Northern Rail run a train hourly Sheffield-Worksop-Lincoln and the journey time to Worksop is about half an hour. It also picks up at Darnall, Woodhouse and Kiveton.
a day return ticket from Sheffield to Worksop is £4.80 before 9:30am and £4.50 after 9:30am. If you travel from Sheffield remember to buy before you board from ticket office or fast-ticket machine, if you travel from Darnall/Woodhouse just get on and pay conductor.
You can download a timetable at www.northernrail.org.

Buses - there are no direct buses from Sheffield to Worksop, you basically need to connect into Stagecoach's Rotherham-Worksop route 19/19A.
I've fed the journey into the Travel South Yorkshire journey planner and it suggests using First's 23/23A from Sheffield to North Anston then onto the above Stagecoach service to Worksop. Total journey about 1hr20 mins!

Why can't you pay the conductor if you get on at Sheffield? What happens if you get on there without a ticket and pay the conductor?

If you get on at a staffed station without a ticket, you don't get any concessionary fares, but have to pay the full price from the conductor. However, if you get on at a station that isn't staffed, you can get concessions.

The route to Worksop from Sheffield by bus is a long drawn out affair and would mean bus changes. I would also suggest the train it will much easier and quicker.
