It's not a bad appointment. Hopefully he will be able to get that little bit extra out of the players. However, considering the players that he has to work with I'm not expecting too much of an improvement.

If like Toshak at Wales he restructures the youth team management then Scotland may have a good future under Smith, but with the current squad not much to go on.

Walter Smith is a good choice, I would like to see Gordon Strachan have a go next time. I miss his interviews

Smith left Rangers in the late 90's. Football has moved on since then, times have changed and Walter is not getting any younger. Perhaps Tommy Burns could maybe have done a similar job as Mark Hughes with Wales - installing some belief in a beleagured footballing nation. Hughes may not have had the knowledge of say Smith, but he gained respect quickly and with the use of a good back up management team - Wales fortunes improved greatly. Being a Welshman, Toshack's appointment could cause needless unrest. People in England will be unaware of his comments during and after matches when they were shown on BBC Wales and not Sky TV. He will have to work very hard to gain respect of the seasoned pro's like robbie savage and ryan giggs.

Let's hope the fortunes of all home nations improve vastly to make football in the country a more exiting prospect.

Even though Robbie Savage is loathed my most sets of fans, no-one can ever deny that he gives it 110%, especially for his country. It wasn't good enough for Toshack, he called Robbie Savage LAZY!?!? When we lost in the Euro 2004 play-off to Russia the country was devastaed but straight after the game Toshack laid into players about their attitude and performance on BBC1 Wales. Maybe after everything had settled down you look for answers but not when the country has just suffered it's biggest sporting dissapointment.

Plus in 1994 Toshack chose a return to the high life in Spain with Real Sociedad and quit Wales after 55 days. co-incidentally-his short management period came straight after the other welsh footballing dissapointment when we lost to Romania at the arms park when a draw would have took us to USA '94.

after Hughes and his fresh impotus, this is a step in the wrong direction. Saunders or Coleman should've taken the job. Threy have more player respect and ability to get the best out of players who do not play at the highest level every week.
