Do these actually serve any purpose?

I'm confused to the actual role that they play within a football club.

Are they jobs for the boys?

It seems that Spurs have had a situation where the Director of Football signs the players and then the manager is forced to make the best of it. It's a disaster scenario at best.

Or perhaps it just gives the chairman a better opportunity to present themselves as actually doing something. Well we know that chairmans do something - they order the pies!

It's the managers job to see to the team.
