Last month Wembley Stadium opened its doors to the general public. This was done to show the locals in the area just how splendid it was to have this marvellous new Stadium in their area.

It's reported today the "grand-looking" red seating has now turned pink, and perhaps 17000 seats have to be replaced.

Let's hope the 2012 Olympic Stadia have a longer maintainence-free record than Wembley.

It's not looking good, is it?

After five years, a multitude of delays and £800 million, the new Wembley Stadium has been beset by a fresh problem: pink seats.

The new Wembley Stadium's seats have faded from red to pink
Thousands of the red plastic seats inside the stadium have faded under the sunshine of London's recent hot spell and will have to be replaced.

Alex Horne, the stadium manager, said the "photo-chromic degradation" was first spotted six months ago.

As many as 17,000 premium seats with extra padding are affected, including those to be occupied by Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, his coaching staff and substitutes at the FA Cup Final later this month.

It is not the first time that Wembley has had trouble with the colour of its seats - 5,000 had to be ripped out last July because of a problem with the red dye.

Perhaps they'll keep the pink for the George Michael concert on 9th June... then change them?!

It said they went brown on Sky Sports News! I don't have a problem with pink seats, but WHY did we think so small when we rebuilt the stadium? 90,000 might seem a lot, but for the big games (with all the comps that are given out) teams only get about 30,000 tickets each. Couldn't we have gone for 110,000 , or even 100,000...?

Most folk, with a bit of an idea about the stability/ light-fastness of polymers and dyes will know that a red dye/ pigment is going to fade quite quickly.

I have used red hair dyes in the past and they fade extremely quickly.

Reds are the least stable in the spectrum.

Echoing PT, one of the fundamentals of art and design is an awareness of fugitive colours (technical term woohoo) and I don't understand why the designers and/or manufacturers didn't have this as one of their primary (colour pun!) concerns.

For heaven's sake!
