After speaking to my contact today about the plight of dogs in our city - we have been offered the following.
Dogs Trust FREE neutering vouchers for ALL Staffy's, rotties and Staffy or rottie crosses. This is due to the high destruction of both in our city at the moment. We have been offered it for sheffield - but I am sure they will support it for any in surrounding areas like Barnsley, Doncaster and I know they are already doing Rotherham.
Hopefully this should add backing to when we start to shout out STOP BREEDING THESE TYPES OF DOGS they are being killed around the country like no others and are causing all rescue centres to be terribly overburdened because of these breeds.
I will be getting a number for people to contact forthe vouchers soon - and we will start to advertise it on our web site as well - but thought i would spread it here first - and hopefully get the newspapers to pick up on it as well.
Really good news i think for us

great news!
It might be more profitable to sterilise the people who are allowing them to breed in the first place though

Any chance they would extend to Siberian Huskies? , costing us a fortune to have the rescues we take in and rehome neutered (about £130 a pop, as huskies need specialist anaesthetic similar to greyhounds etc). We have not achieved charitable status for our new society to date(ESHRA, English siberian Husky rescue accosiation) and most of this comes out of our own pockets (14 dogs over the last 3 months). well done for achieving it for the stff/rot/cross of both though, definately needed, but how does one go about approaching someone for a scheme like this?

Thats brilliant news , freind of mine just took on a staffy 4yrs old, lovely dog and temperment but wants neutering, please keep us up to date. This dog is so gentle and quiet , not as giddy at all as others staffys i've come across. Great news this for new owner though.

It would seem that they have been given this 'status' by the dogs trust as the sheer volume of these dogs passing into rescue is beyond a joke
Nobody wants that status for their breed BV
It breaks my heart to think of that farmer who's recently decided Rott pups are a faster buck than cows

HI,
Would you know whether this is just for the 2 specific breeds or if there is any similar help for labradors to be spayed?
One of my labradors who is not kc registered we would like to get her spayed as we have no intention of breeding her. She is 18months old.

The dogs trust have offered this purely to support staffy's and staffy crosses - as they are the dogs which are high on the destruction lists throughout the country - and more so in certain areas. Yorkshire being one of them.
The offer of support to neuter rotties and rottie crosses again is due to people going crazy and dumping these breeds in pounds due to media hype about the breed.
so - to clarify - it is a fantastic gesture but its purely to support those breeds.
Also BV - even if you do get charitable status - you wont have any subsidised neutering from The Dogs Trust for pedigree rescues. I think (and this is just my belief) that they feel the kc breeders should be supporting their own breed rescues - the Dogs Trust just helps general breed rescue. In supported areas they will support rescues who take in any dog - regardless of breed or non-breed.

i think this is fabulous news if it helps prevent any dog being destroyed.
wouldn't it be better used for the rescues as priority - then they can rehome dogs that are "done."
i know it won't stop the wanton breeding of these type of dogs - but then again the people who want to breed them won't use the services anyway.
anyone who has a dog and doesn't want to breed should be able to afford the procedure before getting a dog imho.
i'm just concerned at it being abused.

the Dogs Trust supports rescue groups in certain areas of high destruction throughout the country. we come under their North East campaign region. any reputable rescue group who will accept ANY breed of dog in can approach the Dogs Trust for support IF THEY ARE IN THESE SUPPORTED AREAS.
That would include staffs and others. We are Rain Rescue and many more throughout the region are supported by them. The dogs trust have done their reseach and feel that neuteing is the way forward to save the high volume of destruction.
This is just an extra tha they are doing as those 2 breed types are in crisis in this area.
CV - tried to pm you - but here is the info
Anyone who wants a voucher has to provide m with the following.
Name, Address and Postcode
Description of breed and colouring of dog
Dog Name
Preferred Vet -
"NOTE only certain vets will participate in this scheme. Only participating vets can be used for the neutering. I will let you know which vet you can use closest to your postcode. There are a good number in sheffield that participate."

I will self fund. Just to let you know, we rescueed pippa when the rspca didnt want to know!
The puppies were advertised for £250 in a local paper and it said with papers.
I thought this sounded funny so i went up. It was a disgustinly kept council house, the puppies were being kept in a shed with no heating where the rain came through at one end!
The owners didnt have paperwork. They didnt even know what hip scoring was.
I kept phoning the rspca that night and the attitude was if part of the shed was sheltered and they had food it was ok!
Im not a rich person and i had £500 in my bank, the pups where £250. I bought 2 and took them home there and then, all i could do was hope the remainder were took shortly.
I took the pups to the vets, they were covered in fleas ticks and 1 was anaemic! the bill was costly.
I never heard anymore and i know that each year the person who owned the bitch still breeds!
I just thought I would post this for whatever reason.....................

Danille - i think you posted that for one good reason - thats why dogs shouldn't be bred from - from people just out to use and abus them. Obviously out to make money and not aything else. I just good god - all that money and it doesn't take that much more time and effort to make sure that the pups and bitch are warm and well fed. But no, they are so greedy - they want every penny for themselves.
I would shop people like that to the tax office to make sure they are declaring that money as income or benefits office if they are on benefits. Those 2 bodies would definately chase through if they thought they were loosing revenue.
Hopefully the poor bitch isn't so bad she is just worn out now bless her. Anyway - spread the neutering word. Will let you all know who to contact once the vouchers are sorted.

The other point could have been something to do with the rspca being a total waste of space in some situations!

How is this being publicised?
Do the very people who have this sort of dog and dont bother to neuter it being reached by the publicity?
