My sister in law bought a nit comb from boots,, its a new one from nitty gritty and shes swearing by it,, not only does it get the lice out but also every single dead husk from every strand of hair!!
Granted the price is steep at £9.99 (from boots) but its worth every penny, and if you buy one online (£10.99) with free p&p they are donating £1 to red nose day, she also said that the kids didnt complain that it hurt even when she did the delicate bit at the nape of the neck, also if the comb breaks then theres an address where you can send it and they will replace it for free!!
has anyone else tried/got one???

yes, i've got one, they're not infallible but they are damn good, i now use a normal comb then a steel nit comb, and then the nitty gritty one, and it does get most of the eggs!

Has anyone got any good advice to clear headlice? My 5 year old daughter has had them 6 times in one school year and she's got them again. I've tried the Full Marks mousse and lotion and I've tried Hedrin last time but none seem to keep them at bay. It's really starting to annoy me because every time she has had them we have kept her off school and spent between 10 and 20 quid on the shampoo, completely got rid of them, then a few weeks later she's got them again! Anyone got any good tips, I've tried putting hairspray in her hair and tying her hair up but to no avail!!!

Conditioner, and a fine toothed comb! even when none are present. If your Daughter suffers any skin complaints (e.g eczma(sp) etc)She will be more prone to head lice. Have a word with your doctor if a constant problem they may be able to prescribe something not available over the counter. I have had a problem in the past, the doctor prescribed some mouse which was fantastic, can`t remember what it was called sorry.

I'd agree about the comb and conditioner strategy. I don't like to use insecticide on my daughter a) because it doesn't seem to work very well
and b) because I don't like the idea of unessecarily exposing her to chemicals.

Thanks, I'll get her to the docs as soon as I can (or should I say as soon as the docs decide she can have an appointment!) In my daughter's school it just seems to be constant, I had a word with the headteacher in September when she had had them 3 times in 6 weeks! And I know schools say now to send children in after treatment (well it is at her school!) but I seem to be the only parent who tries to make sure they are completely gone before I send her back! I'm just glad it's the holidays this week so I can completely get rid of them (saying that no doubt she'll get them again after the holidays!)

I've been very tempted, believe me, but my daughter tells me that shaved heads aren't a good look for a nine year old girl!

The clippers won`t make a difference the lice can still live on the folicles. The only help shaving would have is that you`d be able to see more clearly where they are on the scalp. (yes I realise it maybe was a joke, but others with the same problem may not see it that way)
I agree totaly regarding the appointment situation. Also for every parent that cares about the problem, others may not even be bothered! Remember also to check your own hair regularly along with anyone else that comes into close contact with your daughter, otherwise it may be a pointless task although you probably know this anyway!

Comb and plenty of conditioner, flea combs are much better than nit combs as they are finer, and remove the eggs as well as the live ones!

I have a fool proof but rather harsh technique but which works every single time.
The blue peroxide pwoder which you get with hair bleach kits, Jerome Russel does one, the sachets are about 90p. Dilute it down with 10 parts water, put it in a squeezy bottle and use it as a rinse, use sparingly.
Leave it to sit for a few minutes, it doesn't bleach the hair, it's only one part of the ingredients required to do that.
Then rinse it over and over again.
The chemical murders the little blighters really quickly. If you keep doing it for about a week on alternate days (or until you are satified they have all hatched).
My godkids have dark brown hair and I used it on both of them when they couldn't get rid if them, no colour change in their hair but the little blighters were dead and gone for good! No reinfestation since.
I work with kids and I've never had lice in 16 working years, despite being used as a girls world.
I used to bleach my hair here and there so I guessed that that might ensure that I don't get them, either that or my hair isn't very good for the heebie jeebies.
Try it, I promise it works

Another solution wouls be for the schools to stop pussy footing around with the parents of the kids who have them all the time. There are some at my kids school who seem to be constantly infested but the school cant (or wont ) tackle the parents

My daughter had head lice about a yr and half ago, we tried everything but to no avail, she had them for weeks and it was distressing her a great deal, then 1 day whilst in town, we went in the Bodycare shop on the Moor, and i spotted a shampoo called Escenti Tea Tree, childrens head lice shampoo, so i thought id give it a go, we used it for a week eveery day and they were gone, she,s not had them since.

Use faith in nature rosemary shampoo, and add one drop of tee tree oil of lavender or both this also smells lovely, in to the blob in your hand to wash childs hair.
use as regulay as your ordinary shampoo for about two weeks, then just use occasionally. this is a great way of preventing them comming back.
you can purchase both at boots or any health shop, harvest tyme in hillsbourgh is good,
have used this on my school age boys, and there freinds and we have a nit free life and have had for years now, boys are still in primary school.

I use tea tree oil in my tots shampoo as he has masses of hair.
But I read in a journal that lavendar oil and tea tree oil in such products can cause breast growth in boys and disrupts their hormonal balance. But this reverses back when stopped using the oils in the products.
Anyone else read this?

Spent an absolute fortune on trying to get rid of my daughters when she first started school, eventually found the best thing that got rid for good was just plain ordinary hair gel plastered on it sets like concrete kills them all and their eggs!

I agree - but there's very little that schools can actually do except to send out the odd letter to parents (and often those children who are *constantly* infected have parents that can't read). Long gone are the days of nitty natty nora, it's now considered to be child abuse to look for headlice and the responsibility for this now lies very firmly with the parents. Schools aren't legally allowed to exclude for headlice (presumably as some children would not get an education at all) and it only needs a couple of families who don't bother to check/look after their children - and that keeps an entire school constantly infected Teachers and those working in schools get infected quite often. I agree with you, but unfortunately the law is basically on the side of those who just can't be bothered....

my daughter has them constantly, i get rid of them at weekends and holidays only for her to go back to school and get them again grrr. I'm struggling atm as I find the tea tree oil and similar products affects her asthma. I was looking at the electronic combs but I'm reluctant at £20 in case they're useless! She gets so fed up of sitting there while I attack her barnet with a normal nit comb so I could do with something a bit more powerful!
