I'm looking to design some posters, logos, etc but the software I have is pretty outdated and limiting.
Are there any software packages out there which are free to download which will meet my needs?

You could try freeserifsoftware.com and get hold of Pageplus.

I think the OP is looking for a Publisher type program rather than an image manipulation one.

Use whatever you can.
You can knock up some half-decent simple flyers/posters in a word processor.
Likewise, you *could* use photoshop/gimp.
