Having lived and worked in Colchester (home of the University of Essex) I can guarantee that it's really no contest. Sheffield wins hands down. Yes Colchester is pretty but it's also a very small town. What's more it's very aggressive (it's a major garrison town) and very narrow minded. The shops are OK but there ain't any nice bars or clubs. The main thing going for it is the proximity to London (1hr by train). While Sheffield is England's 4th largest and greenest city. It's only 5 miles from the glorious Peak District. Has great shops, great bars, great clubs, the best Independent cinema in the UK, a great cultural scene (award-winning theatre and galleries) and the nicest people you could ever want to meet. Come to Sheffield, you won't regret it!
